The château of Pierrefonds

I don't think I have ever seen Pierrefonds mentioned as a destination for a day trip from Paris, even though it is less than 100 km from the city. It is really one of the most impressive sights in the region, but it isn't the easiest to reach since it is buried in the middle of the forest of Compiègne.

I spent a delightful morning there last Sunday. The weather was beautiful, and the photographs turned out quite well, I think. (This report might also be interesting for anybody who watches "Merlin" on television, because this is where it is filmed.)

If you are interested in something different near Paris, here is the report: http://tinyurl.com/pierrefondsmerlin

Bravo! Standing ovation for this one, Kerouac. Your best ever--I know I have said this before, but this one is the new best.

A few years ago we drove into Pierrefonds for our last overnight stay before we flew home. We knew nothing about the chateau. Driving into town, we were astonished to see this magnificent building on the hill before us.

The B&B was very nice and the next morning the drive, through the forest of Compiegne and a village that may have been St Jean, was beautiful.

I think that's the year I cried in the airport lounge because I did not want to come home. Thanks for giving me a second chance to see it.

I am so grateful that you are willing to share these wonderful photos with us. it is a great education to travel around the edges of Paris with you. they should be paying you big money for making us all long for Paris and it's suburbs! thanks so much Kerouac!

I looked about 40% thru, and had to leave.
Is it open to the public?

Wonderful! I am sad that my next visit to Paris will be just three days, so I probably shouldn't trundle off on an extnded day trip.

By the way, I share your views of Viollet-le-Duc. I believe too many of us cling to rigid and outmoded notions of "authenticity" rather than enjoying the subjective nature of representation.

/Too esoteric? Sorry!

We spent the better part of a morning in Pierrefonds this past June, when we stayed in Compiegne for 4 nights. Very interesting Chateau and we really enjoyed the region too.

I'm glad you liked the pictures, but I had quite a bit of help from Mother Nature.

Wow indeed (it's hard to come up with a better word).

Virtual leaf-peeping right in my office - got to love that! Hard to choose a favorite, but the castle reflected in the water was très cool. What a lovely area.

Thanks, kerouac.

Is it open to the public?

Yes it's open every day except January 1st, May 1st and December 25th -- but closed on Mondays.

Thank you Kerouac. Pierrefonds was already on our list of places to see next year when we stay for a week in Picardy. Now it is doubly so! Also the forest and Armistice clearing. What lovely photos. Just how big is that photo library of yours!!

Thank you for the great little exposee! There is a wonderful little creperie in Pierrefond...la creperie Ouradour. MMMM.

Also, if you like to "have the place to yourself", don't go in May/June if you can help it, as all the school children take field trips to the castle.

We, however, enjoyed watching them. They also have a Petit Train if you are a person needing help walking up to the castle. It stops at the top to allow people wanting to visit the chateau to get off.
