The best place to change money

Is anyone know where I can get the best exchange rate? (US dollar --> CHF)
Zurich airport or train station or bank

Take your ATM card and use it to withdraw money. This will allow you to get the best exchange rate. Prior to leaving, ask your bank for a second card in case you lose the first one or it gets swallowed up by an ATM machine.

Hi cn,

I suggest that you convert about $25-50 at your departure airport, even though you get a poor exchange rate, so as not to be without cash on arrival and then just use your credit card as much as possible and ATMs when you need cash.

This gives you the best exchange rate.

I think Credit Card or ATM do give a good rate but they also charge transaction fee. e.g. America Express charge 2% for each transaction. In this case, will change money locally have better rate compare?

Hi cn,

Exchange bureaus and banks will charge you from 6 to 12% above the bank rate.

This question gets asked as much as "What to pack for a trip to . . ."

This is a relevant question. Exchange costs are constantly changing. My bank has just added an extra $1.50 conversion charge to any such transaction. Minimum echange/conversion via ATM withdrawal is now $3.00. Decide how much local currency you need. Withdraw that amount in single transaction. A friend claims that his bank does not charge for ATM withdrawals. Spend some time on local phone asking banks for details. Transit points (airports, train stations and hotels) usually have highest fees.

Hi,

My bank charges $0.75 for "out of network" transactions and no "conversion fee".

MBNA does not add any fees to the 1% VISA/MC conversion fee.

Even with a $1 or $2 transaction fee, you are much better off using an ATM card or credit card. And further, much safer as you can withdraw only the cash you need instead of walking around with a lot of cash.
