The best castle near Paris.
For a impending trip to Paris we would like to take a few pictures of a castle for my girlfriends 6th grade class. Not Chateaus but more medievil in type. Not perferct but more fomidible in construction than the gilded Chateaus.

Gaillard castle (in ruins) at Les Andelys, for starters. Here it is, in a few awesome pictures - - www.giverny-art.com/andelys/indexen.htm - - this may be the most spectacular of the line of fortification established across "English Normandy" by Richard Coeur de Lion (the Lionhearted).

There are also castles (almost more a fortified city (again, ruins) at Gisors - - and a neat little tourist attraction (near Rouen, I think) - - commemorating Robert le Diable (my memory may be rusty on some of this) who stood up to Rollo, the Viking king. they have a spectacular viking ship there. I'll see if I can come up with more about this.

Best wishes,

Rex

P.S. - - and I trust that your girlfriend is the TEACHER of the sixth grade class!

I've found a little more. The castle of Robert le Diable is apparently at Moulineaux; perhaps even better is the castle at Falaise. there are some decent pictures, and a little more info at:

www.normandy-tourism.org/gb/03eglise/chat.html

http://www.normandy-tourism.org/gb/2...m/chatfal.html

and

http://www.normandy-tourism.org/gb/t...onquerant.html

Let me know if you could use additional ideas...

Rex
I love castles, and so, reading Ann's response made me want to see. It looks like her suggestion of Pierrefonds might be right on target.

Well a quick search took me to this website - - www.geocities.com/Area51/Hollow/7231

where you can link off to http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Holl...s/castles.html - - and this in turn has a sketch of Pierrefonds.

But reading about the crazy dream of these people who aspire to build a castle in Alaska is as interesting as the (rather well put together) overview of castle evolution that they present there.
