That typical Santorini photo

I speak of the often used photo of Santorini with the blue dome of a church off to one side and the view of the Caldera in the background.

The first time I saw that picture, I said to myself that I have to go there someday and now I am headed there! And while there I would love to track down that same picture spot(s).

Since the Church Dome sits in the bottom of the photo, the photo must be taken from a point at least as high as the top of the church. Since churches are often built on the highest point of a town, I find that a bit odd.

Is the picture taken from the window or a balcony of a nearby building?? Is such a vantage point accessible to the puclic?

Has anybody ever been able to find "the spot" or maybe "spots"??

Thanks for any help

Can you post us a link to 'the picture'?I'd bet the view you mean is taken in Oia.

The whole village stretches down the hillside overlooking the caldera. I'm sure there are several points as you wander down from which you can take that photo.

Believe me, even if you don't get "the" answer on this post once you get there you'll find there are many, MANY similar photo op spots to that famous picture. And, YES, the sky can be THAT blue...I know you're going to love it!

Is this the one? I took this one in May 2001 http://greece2001mjp.homestead.com/files/Fira6.jpg It was from above and it took me a few turns on the street to find it.

PS: The photo was in Fira. This second one, http://www.luvtotravel.homestead.com...IaBlueDome.jpg, was in Oia, which I took last year.

Yes, thank you Monica,

when I looked at your first photo, I was sure that was it. Then I looked at your second photo and thought, oh... maybe that one is it.

So I pulled out my brochures and other sources and compared and it seems that picture number 2 is indeed the one I am thinking of.

However it seems that picture 1 would also do quite nicely, so as Singletail had stated, there seems to be multiple options.

However since I will be staying in Ia, I am probably quite interested in your second picture. Do you recall if it was difficult to get to that vantage point?

And as for the blue sky, I am bringing along a Polarizer for the camera just in case! I know it is cheating but just a little bit.

Thanks again

I think you will be pleasantly surprised at just how blue the sky will be and at how many just as beautiful other spots you will find to photograph. Have a wonderful trip.

monicapileggi, I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading your website! I have always loved to travel and we are planning a Mediterrean cruise for next year so it was fun looking at your pictures!

Also have to add that Lucky is adorable!

Thanks,
Tracy

The second photo was much, much easier to find/take than the one in Fira. Oia is a tiny town with one main street and one piazza. Just look toward the water and you?ll have many photo opportunities (go to my Greek page to see other Santorini pictures)! Do bring your filter because it can be hazy and quite bright (especially if you take the long distance shots) and you would loose that blue color, although I think I took those without the filter (I get lazy putting it on and taking it off for other photos).

Thanks Tracy! Glad you enjoyed my web site. Her name is Lucy. But I should tell princess_01ca to have a couple of Gyros while in Fira at ?Luckys.? They are the best in Greece! Which cruise company are you going on? I really enjoyed my cruise last year. Met lots of great people on the ship.

Have fun everyone!

Sorry about that Monica! I read "Lucy" but typed "Lucky"! Anyways, thanks for sharing your website and princess_01ca, please post about your trip when you get back as I am anxious to hear more about Santorini in planning for our trip!

Best wishes,
Tracy
