Thanksgiving in Europe???
 

Planning a trip to Europe over Thanksgiving. Any ideas as to where to go? Especially considering the time of year, weather, etc.
We have only traveled to London, Rome and Florence.

There is even a restaurant there called Thanksgiving if you would want an American-style dinner on the holiday.

We're doing Florence because of the great museums and food. Shorter days and possible bad weather directed us to a city where many of the key sites were indoors. Paris was another option, but we were just there in '01. Since you've already been to Florence, maybe Paris will work for you?

Thanksgiving in Europe? First, it is held on a different date. Second, don't expect a big to-do at dinner time. They don't celebrate Thanksgiving the same way we do, if at all.

Europeans (at least anyone that I have ever met or know) do not celebrate Thanksgiving, period. It is a North American holiday.

Actually, this year's Thanksgiving in Europe [Germany] already happened. The date was Oct. 5, 2003

I don't think NeedAdvice was concerned about the *Thanksgiving* aspect of traveling to Europe, but was more interested in destination advice given the time of year and conditions in those cities over that period.

We're taking that week off to go to Rome. We also considered Paris and London. I spent Nov 27 - Dec 5, 2001 in Paris and it rained for 4 days and was really cold. We couldn't do as much wandering around (which is a great thing to do in Paris) because we just weren't comfortable.

Weather is mostly luck, but it will probably be colder in Paris and London than in Italy. But it's really a gamble, so go where you WANT to go - you'll always find great things to do regardless of the weather.

I went to Rome and the Amalfi coast over last Thanksgiving and it was fantastic. The weather was very pleasant, no jacket during the day and a sweater or light jacket at night. Nothing was overcrowded and everything was open.

I'm going to Paris this Thanksgiving. I suspect I can find chicken for dinner ... if one has to have "fowl". Some cafe's will have heaters to maintain the cafe' lifestyle, otherwise, there are the museum "must sees" I've planned and well, stores, I'm not much of a shopper but I do love antique stores, books stores, kitchen ware shops, etc., not to mention food stores ... I've an apartment lined up!

My kind of non-shopper.....

... this kind of non-shopping is - simply - educational! Yeah, that's it...educational! I suppose I could have said I'm not thrilled shopping for clothing.. haute coutoure spying ... not my cup of 'the. Just as sitting in a cafe is educational. (WOW...what a justification, eh?)

Last year I was in Luxembourg and surrounding cities over Thanksgiving. The weather was overcast but the high's were around 60 everyday, it wasn't warm but it was comfortable. For Thanksgiving dinner we ate Bratwurst in Trier, Germany. This year I'm headed back to Lux with 3-4 days in Naples. According to a book I have, the weather during November in Naples averages highs of 62 and lows of 46F.

susancoleman; if you find any good kitchenware shops in Paris, please post them after you return. I'd be very interested in those.

Kithen/housewares. Somewhere in some guidebook...or on one of these travel forum boards - someone talked about one on the Ile de Cite or St. Louis... I'll find out! OTherwise, one book I have ... a series of essays about Paris, the writer talks about the basement of the BHV department store... its their hardware department and the author made it sound LOVELY...so I'm giving over an afternoon to that... hehehehehe...then a little dinner over that way??

Being the "educational" type of shopper that I am, I have compiled a brief list of kitchen shops in Paris I think are worth going to:

A. Simon, 36 rue Etienne-Marcel (métro Etienne-Marcel) and 48, rue Montmartre (métro Les Halles)

Casa, 92 rue Saint-Lazare (métro Saint-Lazare)

De Choses et d'Autres, 2 rue Gounoud (métro Périère)

Verrerie de la Bastille, 62 rue de la Roquette (métro Bastille)

There are also 5 or 6 shops called La Vaissellerie around Paris that don't sell pots and pans and fancy restaurant-type kitchen stuff, but that have a huge selection of knives, napkin rings, cups and saucers, bowls, platters, spoon rests, placemats, garlic graters, and other odds and ends at very reasonable prices. I was there last week and added a few pounds to my suitcase.

our 20 day trip over thanksgiving this year will be the following (maybe you might have interest in part of it):

36 hours in the uk to have dinner with friends
arrive berlin in am, daughter and son in law arrive at noon--dinner with a classmate
2 additional days in berlin
flight to munich--evening
tour of bmw factory
2 more days in munich
drive to cesky krumlov, CZ, via berchtesgaden and linz, overnite there.....DRIVE TO PRAGUE..3 full days there..kids go home from there...
drive to dresden via seiffen (toy town)
1.5 full days in dresden
drive to nuremburg mostly for xmas market, overnite there
drive to rothenberg o.b. tauber to visit a friend--2 days there
drive to mosel area for 3 days--grapes and xmas markets
drive to franfurt via st goar--xmas market in frankfurt
fly home

the main purpose originally was to visit as many christmas markets as possible, but they do not start until thanksgiving week so we will see a few but the kids will miss most of them

Thank you StCirq and Susan; I'll be in Paris in November for two days, so will extend my clothes/shoe shopping to kitchen shopping. No time for the Mona Lisa this time I think!
