Thanksgiving In Bayern
Hey Gang,
I am planning to take my girlfriend to Munich and Bavaria for a week in Late November. This is my 8th trip over to Europe and 5th time in Munich so I am fairly knowledgeable with the sites around the city. This is her first time outside the US. I don?t want to attempt to throw so much at her and travel all over the continent so we have decided to see as much of Bavaria as possible in the week
PLAN: My plan for this week is to take in the best of Bayern. For the 3 days we are planning to see and do as much in Munich as possible including...city walks, museum visits, Champions League Soccer match with F.C. Bayern Munich, dachau ect ect. the last 4 days we are wanting to see more of the smaller cities and towns such as Fussen(Castles) Rothenberg and country side.
My question is outside to what I have posted here, are there any more Must sees/do's in Bayern. Is Regensburg or Nuremburg worth a visit? We have a car for the last 2 days so we will be mobile.. Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated

We have done about 6 trips to Bavaria at Thanksgiving time. I would recommend that you spent one night in Rothenburg and take the nightwatchman's walk that leaves from the Rathaus square at 8pm in English. Enjoyable, plus Rothenburg at that time will be decorated for Christmas and will have a festive air in the evening. This is a better way to see this city than a day trip.
You could then leave from Rothenburg and drive the Romantic Road to end in Garmisch and visit the castles you want to. Spend the evening in Garmish and drive to Munich airport the next morning. This is not difficult to do.
Nuremburg is a nice city, but it is all rebuilt from WWII. They did a great job in keeping the ambiance, but it is still a rebuilt city. The famous Christmas market will be going on probably and that is fun to visit. Check this out for timing.
We prefer the smaller cities of Bavaria and spend limited time in Munich. Dachau is nice to visit, but will be depressing to your girlfriend. Be prepared...it will not add to a festive day.
Another great city to visit close by to Munich is Salzburg. The Eagles Nest at Berchtesgaden is awesome, but may be closed for the winter when you get there.

You're right. I bet Eagle's Nest would be closed. I like the overnight idea in Rothenberg. There will also be a Christmas market in the munich train station if I'm not mistaken. Don't know how far Baden Baden would be but a day there at the spa could be fun.

Message: We spent last year in Germany Nov/Dec. This puts you right in middle of Christmas markets in Munich and Rothenburg. If you are planning to stay overnight in Rothenburg on the weekend try and get reservations now. Weekday should be easier. I would also suggest Bamberg and Bamberg is not to far from Rothenburg (1.5 hrs). Bamberg is famous for its smoked beer & a beautiful city.
