Hey Capo - It's a fellow Seattleite, checking in to tell you "thanks" for the Malcolm McLaren "Paris" CD suggestion. I saw a message you posted about it quite some time ago, and since I'm crazy about Paris I went out and purchased it about a month ago. Aaaaanyway, at first play I thought to myself "What is this crazy stuff I'm listening to!?!" But it has since grown on me and I listen to it all the time...and can hardly wait to bring it with me on my 4th trip to the City of Light next month! Like the review said, it IS like some crazy weird soundtrack to a movie...and I can hardly wait to make myself one of the extras in the background with my big groovy soundtrack going! Mclaren Paris is not for everyone. I love it. My husband hates it. If You love music Lituriture from the 20-30syou will love it with references to th days of man ray and kiki when it was fashionable to ride the metro with their pet white mouse. Catherine Deneuve, and my favorite designer sonia ryriel make an appearence and the odes to Satie and miles davis. Fracois hardy sings where have all the flowers gone. This was used as the sound track for one of the best local fashion shows.

What a great message! Especially coming from someone in Seattle. Merci.<BR><BR>I found this in a U. District store about five years ago, was immediately taken with the black & white cover photo, and loved it right away. Quite frankly, I think this is an awesome album. But, like Mimi (Mimi, I love that reference about girls who travel the Metro with white mice) said, it's not for everyone. After all, McLaren includes a version of Serge Gainsbourg's "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" a song which, I believe, was banned from U.S. airplay when it came out, due to its expression of sexuality. <BR><BR>Anyway, because I think it's an awesome album, it makes me feel great to know that you saw my note, bought it, and have had it grow on you. I just think it does a great moody jazz-drenched job of conveying McLaren's feelings about Paris, a city he visted as a teenager and was apparently captivated by, since it seemed far more exotic to him than London. And the album makes Paris very exotic: "Jazz is Paris, and Paris is Jazz." "Walking With Satie." Josephine Baker. Miles Davis. Juliette Greco. <BR><BR>Taking the CD with you and becoming an extra in this movie about (or letter to) Paris sounds like an excellent, and fun, idea. <BR><BR>Thanks once again. <BR><BR>

Another thing I failed to mention is that the "Paris" CD also inspired me to finally buy some Miles Davis CDs, which I've been meaning to do for years...so there's another door it opened up! Next is Charlie Parker, and there I go!<BR><BR>Mimi, don't feel bad...my husband has the same sentiments as yours regarding the CD. (Maybe because I'm going to Paris without him this time and he's worried it'll be a bad influence on me!? :) And I was wondering about the "white mice in the metro" reference, so thanks for clearing that up. <BR><BR>Thanks for the suggestion, mt! JB,<BR>Yes, tentatively the Fodorites' get-together is scheduled for Feb 3rd about about 12. A number of people have confirmed so far... At least the female halves of the couples did. It just ocurred to my husband 10 minutes ago that the Super Bowl is scheduled for that day at 3. I couldn't care less, but some of the invitees may be concerned. I think one could go to the get-together, socialize for a few hours and return home in time for the Super Bowl. Except for the out-of-towners! As the (sigh) default organizer, I will have to bring up this issue among the group and see if anybody gets agitated. It reminds me of the book "Skinny Legs and All" by Tom Robbins, when the customers of a NY restaurant were paralyzed with indecision on being forced to choose between watching the Super Bowl or the long-awaited "Dance of the Seven Veils" by the mysterious, alluring teenage bellydancer.<BR>Email me for details (about the get-together!)
