Thames Dinner Cruises???
 

hi everyone,

We will be in London in October 2003 and I am now planning the gravy for our trip. We already have airline tickets, hotel, metro, and day trips all planned and are just looking at the add on's.

My travel friend and I would both like to take a Thames dinner cruise our last night. Okay, yes I realize that this is really touristry and for the money you could probably have a out of this world meal on land...but we both have done the plain river cruise and there is nothing more spectacular than see all the great london building lit up at night along the river.

So with that said, I am wondering if anyone out there has any comments on the different thames dinner cruises offered? I can't seem to find a review site and when I try to search here I come up with alot of paris dinner cruises but no real info on the thames dinner cruises.

I don't think there are many Thames dinner cruises. Catamaran Cruisers (www.catamarancruisers.co.uk) do an overpriced dinner cruise which attracts mainly Japanese tourists, while City Cruises (www.citycruises.com) do a showboat cruise which combines a basic meal and a cabaret. Neither of these will be fully booked in October which is outside the tourist season, so you don't need to make a decision till you arrive in London.

The restaurants in the Oxo Tower, directly on the river, offer:

- good going on excellent food
- a dynamite view of much of the north bank of the Thames
- no view at all of the south bank.

Of these, the third is probably the best thing of all about the Oxo Tower.

I think their dinner cruises are about £60 per person.

Bateaux London is the same firm as Catamaran Cruisers. For the amount they charge, you should be able to get a much better meal in a restaurant overlooking the river - in the Oxo building, or at Butler's Wharf, for instance.

I definitely recommend against a dinner cruise - as the others say you will be over charged and under fed.

The OXO Tower, Peoples Palace, Butler's Wharf, Globe theatre, or Anchor Pub's deck (if it is warm enough to be outside) all have great river views for a fraction (well the OXO will be a large fraction) the cost and better food.
