TGV to Aix or Avignon plus hotel advice?

My husband and I have now made the grand decision to go by TGV to Provence on our trip to France at the end of June. I am willing to take the TGV to either Aix or Avignon. We are going to rent a car. I know that time is running out for reservations and I know this question has been asked before but I beg your indulgence. I am looking for an upscale hotel for three nights that is in the heart of the area. Of course we are looking for one that is charming, delightful etc. and possibly walking distance into a town or village? Should we be in a town like Aix or St. Remy or......? Does anyone have any other suggestions. After three days in Provence we are going to Paris for a week. We have already booked the Hotel D'Aubusson for that part of the trip.

You guys are great!

Linda

You might consider Le Mas d'Entremont, which is just above Aix on a plateau tht overlooks the area. The hotel itself is delightful, and the food in the restaurant is very good. If you stay long enough to get demi-pension rates, you can choose from the entire menu for lunch or dinner.

The hotel has a very picturesque pool, among other attractions, and you can quickly get to the area's main roads to head toward Aix, Marseille, or Avignon.

For Aix, I say Villa Gallaci, that is steps away from the only great restauant there, Clos de Viloette.
In Avignon, I have stayed at the Hotel L'Europe and that city has many great restaurants, Heilly Lucallus, Christian Etaine, Bain Marie, La Fontaine, Cafe des Artistes and so many more

Le Mas d'Entrement is not in the heart of Aix, as is Villa Gallici and my favorite, Hotel Le Pigonnet (for their beautiful gardens which will be gorgeous in June). You can walk into town from either of those.

Clos de Violette is indeed an excellent choice, but by no means the only great restaurant in Aix.

You might want to try La Domaine a Bournissac, just outside of St. Remy. This is a beautiful, upscale country inn with restaurant and pool. The website is www.la-maison-a-bournissac.com. We spent a delightful week there last May. Bon voyage!
