TGIF

Not to be confused with Friday Rants & Raves, I thought we could post our So Happy it is Friday thoughts here. From your part of the world. What is the plan for the weekend?

I will go first~
Florida, USA.
Hot and sunny.
Film Festival this weekend so I will be at the cinema~
Your turn!

sheila May 14th, 2004 11:29 AM

Given that we're 4- 8 hours ahead of you chaps, and given teh fortnight I've just had, I'll tell you, I left the office at 5.45pm (unbelievably early) I have dealt with my email, walked the dog, had a bath and am heading for bed. I've had a large (very large) double matured Lagavulin to keep me company. My husband's due in on the last Amsterdam flight, but I'll be dead to the world by then

Tomnorrow my sister and her family are coming to see us in the afternoon, after my niece has done an open day at the college she means to go to in September. I have French lesson in the morning, I have to drive across Aberdeenshire to see my secretary who had a baby last week, then come home, watch the Challenge Cup Final, and cook supper for 6;

on Sunday I have the usual crew of 6 adults and 3 children coming for supper to celebrate a birthday.

And the weather forecast is good.

jarmnm May 14th, 2004 11:30 AM

Theater on Sunday! R&R weekend!

Marilyn May 14th, 2004 11:40 AM

Manhattan here we come on Sunday!

mvor May 14th, 2004 11:56 AM

Sat: Unpack from trip to Grand Canyon/ Pack for San Diego next week.

Sun: Plant flowers and celebrate my sister's 41st birthday!

Judy May 14th, 2004 12:11 PM

This is our "prepare for France" weekend...we leave Thursday for two weeks in the Dordogne, St. Emilion and Paris!
I just got in from buying several Bordeaux wines, a couple baguettes and an assortment of French cheeses and pates. Friends who will meet us in St. Emilion at the beginning of our second week are coming over tonight to finalize plans.
The rest of the weekend will be spent, among other things, consolidating all of the valuable info I've printed from this site and beginning to stage items for packing!

Statia May 14th, 2004 12:33 PM

Here in the Dutch W.I., I'll be going out for sunset drinks with my husband shortly. Otherwise, I have an utterly exciting weekend planned of playing "catch up" in my house after being gone nearly three months. That is....if I can stay off Fodor's long enough. :)

Gardyloo May 14th, 2004 12:42 PM

Unfortunately we have now recovered from serious bouts of jetlag, so that excuse is inoperable when dealing with the accumulated bills, phone messages, weeds, relatives and other blights on humanity (well, not all the bills are blights) that amassed in our absence. "Can you believe that a week (now two weeks) ago we were in...?" Seems like the Jurassic age. Barcelona, are you still there?

Birthday festivities for in-laws Sunday means I have to go into the rear garden (now there's a misnomer) to exhume the patio furniture from the spoor of winter so that visiting family units won't be sitting on squirrel poop left by our bushy-tailed fauna. (Big cedar trees and chestnuts, aka squirrel condos.)

Perhaps it will rain...

Croque_Madame May 14th, 2004 01:07 PM

Taking 17 year old granddaughter to buy her first car.

Please, pass the Valium!

dln May 14th, 2004 01:08 PM

Friday night will find my daughter and me at a gallery opening downtown, complete with silent auction and various bands playing! Should be a gala evening.

Saturday--my husband comes home from a business trip to the UK. The poor man will be knackered. It took him 48 hours all told to get to Gatwick, not including actual flight time (and he wasn't even supposed to go there; he was diverted from Birminham). It was all because of the thunderstorms that were happening in Houston, Chicago, and Newark. Made all the air travel go haywire! So the dear man is coming home to a clean house--believe me that doesn't happen often--and a big juicy steak. He'll think Father's Day has arrived early.

Sunday I think we will relax and read the paper and think about our upcoming trip to Paris and Provence!

capo May 14th, 2004 01:17 PM

TGIF...Toujours Grande Incroyable Froid? (as in bière) :)

dln May 14th, 2004 01:24 PM

Or, as my husband is wont to say, "TGIF! It's 'beer-thirty!'"

Marianna May 14th, 2004 01:52 PM

Oh Scarlett, I truly am happy it is Friday!

The children at school are starting to get into the "end of the year" attitude. They are sweet, but when the weather is nice (as it is today here in the Boston area) AND it is May, it is a challenge to keep them focused on learning (even though we try to keep it exciting, engaging and interesting) and we have the MCAS tests next week!

We are not going anywhere, but this weekend our son and his girlfriend are coming here for Sunday dinner - this is a first!

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Scarlett May 14th, 2004 04:09 PM

This is great!
Sheila, whose birthday, not yours is it??
Marilyn, I wish I could be there for another lunch together, we have to make a date for the future! I hear you will be meeting some Fodorites in NYC, how cool is that?
Statia, where did you watch the sunset? from your home or at the beach?
Croque Madame, it is frightening and hilarious, isn't it? I remember teaching my son to use my Saab stick shift, jerk, lurch, stall. He got more frustrated, I tried so hard not to laugh.
Gardyloo, that is one thing that we have noticed about Florida squirrels..they are tiny and not so destructive, as the squirrels in the North. I hope your jet lag evaporates and you start planning your next trip:)
dln, Too bad you didn't get to take the trip with your husband. It could have turned into something more fun, perhaps? shopping while waiting? exploring while finding your way to the right city?
Aahh Marianna, there is nothing like meeting that first girlfriend~
Tomorrow we will see the first of our Film Festival films and tomorrow night we will get to see/meet Bill Murray.
I hope everyone has a lovely weekend ((F))

Calamari May 14th, 2004 04:14 PM

Marilyn - Have a great trip!

We will be working on school projects and sorting through clothes to take on our trip and shopping for new stuff.

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 04:17 PM

I went downtown to my favorite shop where the reps of the designers were there serving wine and food. I also planted a lilac bush already with four blooming flowers. I don't have alot of sun back there so praying it survives. I met a friend for a drink and now back after many hours and my J. greeted me with a pastis.

Scarlett May 14th, 2004 04:46 PM

Pastis, cigale? How thoughtful of J ~
How many days until Provence :)

rickey May 14th, 2004 05:26 PM

TGIF - Finally the right Friday! Tomorrow we head off to Paris, Naples, Sorrento, Rome, Venice, and Frankfurt.

Thanks to everybody for all the info about discount flights within Europe, inexpensive hotels everywhere, driving the Amalfi Coast, life jackets in Venice, sneakers in Paris, ATM's and credit cards, Pompeii, what to wear in churches, coffee in Italy, restrooms in MacDonalds, lineups and admission charges everywhere, open jaw flights, what to tip, how to pack, Volare Air weight restrictions, train travel in Italy, which books to read and movies to see, digital cameras, money belts, Sorrento Webcam, internet cafes, and especially how not to look like a tourist!

I'm going to have a great weekend! (plus another couple of weeks)

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 05:40 PM

Dear Scarlett, If I count, Ill be nervous. It's August 23, meanwhile my petite Provence(chez mimi) is now having good weather. Hop over for a pastis ( I read your Yank will be away.)

P_M May 14th, 2004 06:04 PM

This weekend will not be very exciting for me, so I'll tell you about next weekend. On Friday, May 21 I'll be flying to Las Vegas, staying the weekend, then driving to LA to sail the Monarch of the Seas from Monday through Friday. The following Saturday I will return home from LA. So next Friday I'll be the one who is saying Yippee, TGIF!!
:-)

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 06:24 PM

I'm happy for you, but where are you going on the Monarch?

tpatricco May 14th, 2004 06:49 PM

Aaahhhh Friday! The start of my two week vacation! Tuesday morning we're off to St. John for 10 days of relaxing, reading, snorkling, hiking, cooking, eating & driniking! Felt so good to leave the office today, not to return until JUNE! This weekend we'll be doing some gardening, finish packing & attend my cousin's bridal shower on Sunday too. So thankful it's finally warm and sunny in NJ! (Even if we did have some amazing thunderstorms this week!) Trish

kybourbon May 14th, 2004 06:49 PM

I went to the Relay for Life tonight which started out sunny and hot and turned stormy. Now home popping a cork and having some wine.

Saturday night I will go to the wine tasting at our local wine store. They have tastings every Friday and Saturday nights from 4-8 with a different vineyard each weekend. Last weekend we had the 1st annual KY Wine and Vine Fest so I am inviting everyone on Fodor's to come next year. Mark your calendars!

If I survive the wine tasting I will head to a friend's 50th birthday party.

Wednesday I will be in Cincinnati and Thursday I will be in Cambridge/Boston to help my daughter pack her dorm room and bring stuff back home. I still don't understand why she can't store everything for the summer.

Cigalechanta - Are we going to get together for a drink or dinner next weekend. I will be in Boston until Sunday and then have to leave for NYC so Friday or Saturday would work for me.

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 07:08 PM

Hi Kay, Any day would be good for me as J. will be away at rehersals. Name where. Email me at hot mail I'll give you my tel. no. if you need it. Great! looking forward to our meeting.

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 07:13 PM

OOPS, it must be Friday. J reminded me I promised to attend the Sat concert.

kybourbon May 14th, 2004 07:14 PM

Cigalechanta- I don't have your hotmail email. What is it? Saturday would probably be better for me as I think my daughter will want to spend her last night there out with her boyfriend not me. I'm not sure where I am staying yet but am planning on pricelining some rooms. I will have a car.

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 07:18 PM

I has to be Friday. J reminded me his concert is that night. He sings with the Concord chorale and has tickets for me and my cousin. His rehersal is friday so I'm free,
[email protected]

cigalechanta May 14th, 2004 07:33 PM

Well, Marianna, your boy is bringing the girl home. Can I be the ring bearer...LOL...:)

sheila May 14th, 2004 09:50 PM

Trav's birthday was last Wednesday Mimi, but he was in New York

Marianna May 15th, 2004 03:59 AM

Mimi, we don't even mention marriage to him! He is "too busy" with his music business to even think about it - or so he says. It was like pulling teeth to get them to meet us for a dinner out a few months ago. So, having her come here for dinner is a big thing.

Off to plan the dinner, select a wine, buy the groceries and be home in time to see SeaUrchin at the Sorrento Tabacchi shop this afternoon!

Byrd May 15th, 2004 06:10 AM

I just have to tell about our weekend...we're having a wedding!

Our good friends (and part of our little travel group) Mary Jo and Bob are getting married this afternoon!

Our little town is at its prettiest right now, with everything green and blooming. The reception following the ceremony is to be in their wonderful Queen Anne Victorian home.

Last night there was a lovely rehearsal party at another friend's home, and we got to meet Mary Jo's friends and family from Louisville.

We have all been through our children's weddings in the last few years, but it has been a long time since our own friends were the bride and groom!

Obviously, we're having a wonderful weekend.

Byrd

ggnga May 15th, 2004 06:18 AM

WORK... 11pm to 11am every Fri. & Sat. night. I do like my job though and by taking JUST 1 weekend off I have 10 DAYS TO TRAVEL!!!

cigalechanta May 15th, 2004 07:54 AM

Sheila, Too bad he didn't make it to Boston.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, TRAV, you doll, you.!

P_M May 15th, 2004 01:57 PM

Cigalechanta, the Monarch will be sailing from LA and stopping in San Diego, Catalina, and Ensenada, Mexico. I've been to SD before, but not Catalina or Ensenada, so I'm really excited about this trip. Counting the days....
