Texting in France

(I have T Mobile service, if that matters, with free international texting.)

I have a U.S. Phone number and am trying to text a French phone number. I cannot get the text to go through. I am not sure if I am putting in the phone number correctly or if there is another reason.

I was given the number as: 06 22 33 44 55

I have tried all combinations and the text won't go through.
Using +33. With and without the 0 etc
Can you help me?

Thanks.

Do you use google voice? It must be turned off for outgoing calls/texts. In the google voice setting set to "never use google voice to make any calls." Use the stock message application.

A phone, for outgoing calls/text purpose, behaves like a local phone. So within France, it should be just like a local would text the same number, 06 22 33 44 55.

While others mention +33 method always works, on some older phones, I had to force translate to 0033 to make it work in Europe. So it should be +33 6 22 33 44 55 or 0033 6 22 33 44 55.

Have you checked the cellular network settings? Or texted someone else successfully? (or voice?)

DebitNM Oct 6th, 2015 08:53 AM

I've tried both, not going through.

I have tried texting someone else, it's not working on that number either.

Can you text the States? Maybe something disabled for all texts.

I just tried to text hubby, it didn't go thru. It's the phone.

I wonder if it's the location? We had some trouble texting on occasion in the UK recently (also T-Mobile) and it usually seemed to be the location, and sometimes just being inside a building.

Hubby sent me text, it went thru on his phone, but didn't come in on mine. Says sent. And the phones are 1 meter apart. :)

That narrows it down!

Can he text the France number?

Dukey1 Oct 6th, 2015 09:58 AM

does it work by using the 001+ first?

Dukey1 Oct 6th, 2015 09:59 AM

Duh! Forget I said that! meant to say using 011 first (which shouldn't help if you are connected to the local phone network).

His phone got the text through to France phone # :)

I went to an Orange boutique with a visiting friend who bought the tourist SIM at the lowest rate. It only gives one hour of calls but 500 texts anywhere in the world.

And just like that, it's working again!

Elizabeth_S Oct 7th, 2015 06:58 AM

Did you turn your phone off? May not have properly connected initially. Great!

DebitNM Oct 7th, 2015 07:25 AM

I took the battery out, shut the phone off, all the usual thing Liz. It just decided to work!

I think that WhatsApp is supposed to work everywhere, free of charge.

It sounds like you never had cell connection at all. Restarting the phone forced the phone to search for a compatible roaming partner.
