Text indexing

Anyone noticed that text indexing dates back only to the first of the year? Found little prior to 1/1/02.

I suspect that they went with something that is halfway working correctly rather than nothing at all. It's as if half of the database is "missing" - - but a few simple techniques confirm that it's "all still there" - - just not indexed.

Here's an example:

http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgTopics.jsp?fid=2&start=34900

still takes you back roughly one year ago.

But various searches come up with about half the anticipated results. And it's not as simple as more recent stuff is indexed, and older is not.

There are huge indexing gaps in July and August.
I stand corrected. There is essentially no text indexing before October 2001.

Evidently we are not strong enough to read about the world back "before then".
Like http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1320558

for example.
In addition to no indexing before October 2001, there are big gaps in the indexing in late August-early September and late July-mid-August. I can't say if there are others or not.

See http://www.fodors.com/forums/pgMessages.jsp?fid=2&tid=1400466

for example.

Maybe it can all be fixed when I get back, in ten days.

I will send this to [email protected]

Best wishes,

Rex
Have a good trip, Rex!

lynlor Sep 12th, 2002 10:25 AM

I found some postings in October 2000. That is when I first discovered Fodors.

lynlor Sep 12th, 2002 03:19 PM

Found another one in July 1999. I'm sure there are others that go back even further that are up and running.

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx Sep 12th, 2002 03:23 PM

Another one. July 1998.

Rex Sep 22nd, 2002 10:04 AM

I still think that there are some very big holes in the indexing - - specifically between Aug 22 and Sep 10. But I agree that the pre-Oct 2001 problem is fixed.
Rex Sep 23rd, 2002 07:12 AM

Very confusing, this indexing "hole" - - but very real, I am pretty sure. I guess I will send this message to fodors.com to see if they understand the problem (or more to the point, just fix it).
Rex Sep 24th, 2002 11:17 AM

Topping, for Wendy...
Rex Sep 24th, 2002 11:21 AM

This issue of a "hole" is curiouser and curiouser. There is new indexing from the past 24 hours. But the "hole" in the indexing from Aug 22 to Sep 10 remains.
ttt Sep 24th, 2002 11:53 AM

sounds like a conspiracy

Rex Sep 24th, 2002 03:04 PM

Now it's fixed! Thank you very much Fodors!
Some Sep 25th, 2002 03:09 PM

Some of them are not (fixed).
xxx Sep 26th, 2002 01:59 PM

Not much changed today.
xxx Sep 27th, 2002 05:07 AM

Indexing updated from yesterday. Holes still not fixed.
Rex Oct 4th, 2002 06:02 AM

These indexing holes are still not fixed. And the indexing of this particular thread is very puzzling. It CAN be retrieved by searching the word "text" or "indexing", but NOT by searching "database" nor "lynlor" nor "October".

It's as if some threads are marked to be indexed as "title only".

This may explain why some threads appear to be missing. If they are indexed as title only, it will be much harder to find them.
