According to Obama, ISIS is going to attack the US.

Better cancel my trip to Mexico

MissPrism Sep 1st, 2014 03:29 AM

London is not England, but you could also find other cities to attack. The IRA put a bomb outside a MacDonalds the day before Mothering Sunday in Warrington, a small country town in Cheshire. The location and date were intended to target children and they managed to kill two.

Your chances of being the victim of a terrorist attack are extremely low as others have said.

I'm sure the citizens of Boston who donated funds for that atrocity to be carried out will be glad of the reminder.

Debbielynn Sep 1st, 2014 07:06 AM

Hooameye, I know there are other cities, but my plans are in London.

TPaxe Sep 1st, 2014 09:09 AM

This thread has really scared the wits out of me. Do not go to London, cancel Paris. Avoid Europe all together.

Cancel your trip and plan again this time next year and see how the news is going then.

poole Sep 1st, 2014 10:14 AM

Seriously, I would go.

You may never get another chance. Any number of things can happen to your health, funds or even worse security risks.

Go, enjoy and be glad you did it !!

justineparis Sep 1st, 2014 11:50 PM

I am stunned that Debbielyns friends actually cancelled a trip.. I can't imagine being that nervous.

I can't imagine living in the States that allow one to carry guns around..

I guess we all have our fears..

I would go to either London or paris tomorrow.

justine as you say (shakes head and drops it into hands), all you need to do is look at the safety statistics. It is just so much safer to be in the UK than the USA.

PatrickLondon Sep 2nd, 2014 01:40 AM

All I can say is, we're all travelling around as normal and nothing visible around us is changing. Of course we don't know what led the relevant advisers to up the threat warning, but (to repeat myself) this is NOT a warning to residents, let alone tourists, to do or not do, anything different from normal, apart from maybe keeping more of an eye out for unattended luggage and the like.

It's an instruction to people who deal with security matters to move to the next level up of preparatory measures and general vigilance. Nothing more.

I flew out of LHR on Firday evening - just after this announcement and back again last night. The airport was the same as always with the usual security precautions but nothing visibly different. Felt completely safe there.

Much as I love visiting the US (and have been there countless times over the years), I often feel anxious and uneasy before and while visiting there, I think mainly due to the prevalence of firearms as others have mentioned.

bilboburgler Sep 2nd, 2014 05:58 AM

I guess the NATO meeting in Wales next week could be driver

KTtravel Sep 2nd, 2014 06:07 AM

Given that a pedestrian was shot by a motorist yesterday afternoon after an altercation two blocks away from where I work, I think I may feel safer on my upcoming trip to Paris and London.

Hooameye Sep 3rd, 2014 02:32 AM

"OMG, we're all gonna die"...............To quote from various American disaster films.

signs9 Sep 5th, 2014 08:50 PM

Debbielynne, I understand how you feel. I've been planning a trip with family to France for many months now and as the trip is almost upon us I find myself getting more & more apprehensive! I should be excited but instead I'm very anxious.

We fly out of Newark on Tuesday and we're going to Marseille with a stop in Brussels first. Our return flight home is out of Paris back to Newark. Once we arrive I'll be fine but I really hate air travel to begin with and the added tension of a possible terrorist thread is taking a bit of fun out of this for me. Our adult kids will be traveling with us along with cousins, aunts and uncles. We have a nice sized group but even my well traveled brother in law made sure his will is up to date...of course when I heard that it got me even more anxious!

So while I don't have any plans to cancel, I will be relieved once we have landed and are far from the airport!

justineparis Sep 5th, 2014 09:36 PM

Signs , you will look back on this a few weeks from now and be amazed you wasted the worry!

You will have a great adventure! 2

PatrickLondon Sep 5th, 2014 10:28 PM

Signs, everyone gets anxious before a big trip to some degree (and I'd imagine having a large family group adds its own.... shall we say, dynamic).

I don't suppose everything will go to plan, but there's not that much more or less chance today than a few months ago of it being a disaster either.

bilboburgler Sep 6th, 2014 02:09 AM

signs, just breath, you are in more danger in you present location than you will ever be in Europe. It is just fear of the unfamiliar. I get it every time I go abroad, crikey I get it every time I go to a large city in my own country.

Suck it in and enjoy, once you relax (and it may take a couple of days you will love it)

signs9 Sep 6th, 2014 04:56 AM

Thank you justinparis, PatrickLondon & billboburgler! I certainly hope that in a few weeks I will look back on the trip with only fond memories! :)

PatrickLondon Sep 6th, 2014 08:29 AM

Honestly, I think your party's biggest danger in London will be from not making sure everyone's looking the right way before stepping out to cross the road.

justineparis Sep 6th, 2014 10:41 AM

TOTALLY agree with PatrickLondon on that one..I know I know, I see the signs painted on the road too..I am forever forgetting to look the "wrong" way first and last..
