TENERIFE

Can someone give me information on:
- Best beaches, whitest sand, nicest bays
- Can one windsurf / buggyboard?. Best spots?
- Best hikes, can one hike to the top of the 3700m volcano
- Best fish restaurants with authentic atmosphere
- Good car rental deals at airport (or Internet?)
- Tourist places to avoid, i.e drunken Brits and fat Germans
- Any other interesting sites?

All advice appreciated! Thanks

Best beaches: if you look for white sandy beaches, choose another island. Tenerife is volcanic so the beaches have dark sand and are mostly artificial.
Windsurf: idem ditto - Fuerteventura is the place to be.
Car rental: car rental companies all over the island at cheap prices.
Tourist places to avoid: almost the whole island is covered with tourists but the "worst" place is Playa de las Americas. Lots of British and Scandinavian people, fewer Germans.

Maybe next time you could be a bit more polite towards our British and German co-travellers.

So, Myriam, have you never been to Tenerife? I think Rocco was being remarkably polite toward the Brits and Germans after what I've witnessed in Tenerife. They make U.S. college students in Fort Lauderdale on spring break look like a senior citizen Mormon church group.

Whoopee! Phil, if that's true, that Brits and Germans really party (on Tenerife), more than college students in Ft. Lauderdale (or is it now Daytona???) Whooppee! I'm gonna have one helluva GREAT time! I'll buy the first round!
Phil,
Yes, we've been to Tenerife several times. And yes, we've also seen people that go on vacation just to go out at night, to drink and to fight. But there is no reason to generalize.

We have also seen lots of drunken and fat people at all inclusive resorts in the Caribbean who were not British or German, if you understand what I mean.

I think posters may realize that it's not just Americans that are active on this forum.

So if they island of Tenerife is infested with fat Germans and drunken Brits, would Gomera be a better bet?

Why don't you team up with Markus, who also finds the Brits repulsive (their food, anyway). Gave up on the snotty twits on the Riviera?

Myriam Aug 22nd, 2000 11:08 PM

If you like peace and quiet and beautiful nature, then go to Gomera. The island has only 2 decent hotels each with their small private beach.
In my opinion Gomera is OK for a one or two days excursion from another island.

Fuerteventura is the best island for white beaches and good windsurfing opportunities.

Gran Canaria will also be OK with its sandy Maspalomas beach and the Playa del Ingles with beautiful desertlike dunes and usually lots of wind.
