Tell the truth...re:Paris museums
The first Sunday of every month? Is it a zoo? We will be there next week...
Thanks! |
You get what you (don't) pay for...
|
It is normally quite crowded. If you are really interested in the art, it won't be the best of conditions. As long as I am telling the truth, I must confess that I have never been in Paris the first Sunday in March.
|
It will be crowded and from what I was told, its mostly the "locals", Parisiennes and their families.
I'd go...why not? They've already seen Mona, the Winged Victory etc... and French families are going to the new exhibits. I love that they, as a culture, still love Art...it is important. |
I was at the Louve on the first Sunday in June a couple of years ago. The line was pretty long and I thought we would be waiting forever but they split the line somehow and the wait was about half an hour I'd say. I didn't have any problem seeing anything I wanted to see. There is no way to predict, of course, how long a wait there may be on any particular Sunday. We didn't get there till, I'm guessing, about 11:00 or so, so perhaps if you go earlier the line wouldn't be as long.

We went to the Louvre the first Sunday of last December. The line was huge at ALL entrances and we decided that once you got inside it would be a zoo. We passed! (At least we've been there before tho)
|
I'll make the suggestion that if you must go on a Sunday, get to the line either first thing in the morning, or else later in the afternoon, around 3pm (which will limit your visit)
Also, don't go with the entrance line at the Pyramid, try entering via the Louvre-Palais Royal metro station If you want to 'experience' the Pyramid, you can always exit that way. |
We've only gone to one museum on free Sunday and it wasn't crowded, but on the other hand, it wasn't one of the "biggies" either. What we have had luck in doing in Europe, where lunch hour is king, is to get to the museums during lunchtime. The lines are generally light then because no one is thinking about sightseeing--they're all eating!
