Tell the truth! How much time do you really spend in Fodorville?

No matter how hard I try, I just can't keep up with everything going on here. Sometimes I miss checking on Fodors for a whole day or two--and you know how much can be missed in that length of time.

So how do you find the time to read and answer so many posts? I don't work but I still seem to be too busy to give or receive much help here.

Tell me how you do it! I want to be a Super Fodorite!

Byrd

FainaAgain Apr 8th, 2005 01:24 PM

If you don't work - then I can't help you. I spend as much time here as my work allows me Mon-Fri.

Leely Apr 8th, 2005 01:30 PM

Faina,
I can top you. A couple of months ago they gave me another monitor (long story, but I do art-type stuff and sometimes need to look at a few diif. things at once).

I have discovered that my extra screen is perfect for keeping fodors and my iTunes visible almost all day!

So, Byrd, yeah, I don't know, if you're not at a desk for 8-10 hours, I can't help you either.

What I've learned; the Africa board saved my life. But the Europe board is by far the most amusing.

SeaUrchin Apr 8th, 2005 01:35 PM

First thing in the morning at The Office I log onto my emails and Fodors. I keep Fodors on the computer all day and hop over once in a while to see what you all are doing. It's a habit now.
At night I log on at home to check emails and maybe jump over to Fodors then too.

Addicted?

mr_go Apr 8th, 2005 01:40 PM

I'm very hit-and-run, depending on my workload (which is, itself, quite sporadic) and what's happening in my other regular discussion communities.

This is the third time I've checked in today.

Amanda23 Apr 8th, 2005 01:42 PM

I'm similar to SeaUrchin. I check fodors first thing in the morning, then keep it minimized for most of the day so I can "get my fix" whenever I need it!

TexasAggie Apr 8th, 2005 01:43 PM

It's very simple Byrd... become a tax accountant. You will find the vast majority of your projects so boring that you cannot help but come and post on Fodors to maintain your sanity!

ira Apr 8th, 2005 01:43 PM

>So how do you find the time to read and answer so many posts?<

I get up early in the morning and go through all of the posts since I logged off.

I avoid doing all of the chores that I am supposed to do during the day.

ira Apr 8th, 2005 01:46 PM

Hi Leely
>... the Africa board saved my life.

You can't just leave it at that!

How? What? :)

suze Apr 8th, 2005 01:49 PM

<How much time...>

Way more than I am willing to admit!

sfowler Apr 8th, 2005 01:51 PM

Not as much as I used to.

Leely Apr 8th, 2005 01:54 PM

Oh, Ira, you caught me. Metaphor (read: exaggeration).

Just meant the very practical advice re: anti-malarials, meningitis vaccines, etc., and the even-keeled "calm down, you'll be fine, people go all the time" reassurances.

But they don't have the catfights this board does.

Or the lightbulb (smile).

alya Apr 8th, 2005 01:55 PM

I'm with Ira,

I the check new postings since I logged off and then I pop in once or twice a day.

I'm a recent Newbie but don't find I have to post too often since I tend to have the same point of view as Patrick - however he's more eloquent and succinct than I could ever be.

traveldawg Apr 8th, 2005 02:32 PM

It has been awhile since I have been to Europe so I use this to pretend I am going again. That makes it fun.

liz302 Apr 8th, 2005 02:41 PM

I'm a college student with about a month left before my boyfriend and I make our first transatlantic journey together-- my first in four years, his first ever, and the result of over 2 years of scrimping and saving for both of us! Maybe that explains why this forum and other travel websites have become my latest online procrastination aid!

Writer's block? Read the latest posts.

Finally came up with an introduction paragraph? Reward myself by reading those posts again.

Two pages written? Search trenitalia schedules.

Is it a coincidence that all of my writing assignments are beginning to contain references/analogies/allusions to travel? I don't think so.

Maybe I need to snip my ethernet cable before I become a fully addicted Fodorite and have to enroll myself in a 12-step program . . .

:-D

cyberUK Apr 8th, 2005 03:05 PM

I also have two monitors here at "work"
One for Fodor's, where I mostly lurk.

I read most new headings, but not too many "tops"

Since I began to follow this board, I notice different things when I travel now.

I am also very aware of the tourists in my own city, they are so easy to spot, you know (they wear new white trainers)

And I often offer help, when they look like they are lost or unsure.

I know that I spend too much time here.
But it fills my time between real trips.

toni Apr 8th, 2005 03:24 PM

Seems to be the pattern, I log on first thing in the morning and when I get home from work, more often than that on the weekend. My family thinks I am O/C, I know I am. But there are a lot worse things to be addicted to, right?

tudorprincess Apr 8th, 2005 03:30 PM

I log on before I go to work as I don't have access to a computer on my job. Once I get home I log on again and then look in off and on until I go to bed as I have a lap top on the kitchen table pretty much 24/7 as well as the PC in the office upstairs.

tedgale Apr 8th, 2005 03:32 PM

Helps me unwind after work.

I usually make it home from work around 7 pm and that is peak posting time anyway. So there is lots happening on the board.

I am alone right now as my spouse is in Poland for work. So it fills the time, too -- and lets me share the great trips we have taken -- most recently to Prague, Rome and Tuscany (March 3-21).

Sometimes, though I wake up prematurely -- a bad sign -- and slip onto Fodors in the early hours: Not a good practice, as I should be husbanding ALL my energies to be effective through the work-day (LOL)

ira Apr 8th, 2005 03:40 PM

Hi Liz,

>I need to snip my ethernet cable before I become a fully addicted Fodorite and have to enroll myself in a 12-step program.<

It's a 48 step program.

((I))

sandi_travelnut Apr 8th, 2005 03:56 PM

Log on as soon as I get to work and visit as frequently as possible throughout the day.

annesherrod Apr 8th, 2005 04:04 PM

It is an addiction. But some days I am on a lot. Then days will go by without checking in due to work travel, kids, etc...

Marilyn Apr 8th, 2005 04:35 PM

Ask me my age, ask me my weight, but do NOT ask me how much time I spend on this forum. I'm sure I would be horrified to know.

I turn on the computer with my 2nd cup of coffee in the morning, check and respond to emails, and read additions to threads I've posted on. I leave fodors open when I'm home, and check it when I happen to be at my desk (on and off all day).

When I'm away from the computer, I pay a clipping service to send me anything interesting. (KIDDING!)

P_M Apr 8th, 2005 05:52 PM

It's amazing how many of us log in first thing in the morning at work. I cannot count how many times a day I pop in to see what you're all talking about.

Ever since I became a Fodorite, my productivity at work has gone WAY down. Funny, because people see me sitting at my desk throughout lunch and think I'm working, when in fact I'm usually Fodoring around.

JJBhoy Apr 8th, 2005 06:00 PM

Byrd,

Not sure that I like your insinuation that I am a hopeless Fodors junkie who simply can't stop myself from logging in.

Sorry - did I get a little bit defensive there? :)

Jim

Byrd Apr 8th, 2005 06:08 PM

Jim,

Hey, I'm a Fodoraddict, too! I just seem to have so many things that call me away from all the fun on daily Fodors!

And I'm impressed that so many of you seem to read faster than I, and keep up with everything...

Byrd

travlintoes Apr 8th, 2005 06:43 PM

Hi--I am a fairly new Fodorite and I can't get by the day without checking at least 3 times. The evening is the ideal time to relax and get a laugh or two from all you wisecrackin guys! I love to read all your posts. I will be asking many questions over the course of the next few months as I am in the veery early stages of planning my 2006 trek to Italy and possibility southern France. :) Keep all the great ideas and friendly bantering going on!! Judy

travlintoes Apr 8th, 2005 06:47 PM

Forgot to mention---I'll be back in the workforce in a couple weeks and don't know how or if I will be able to sneak a peak at what you are all writing!! I can feel the withdrawal symptoms already beginning to pain me. Help! :)

Patrick Apr 8th, 2005 06:48 PM

I keep Fodors logged into my laptop all the time and spend about a hour a day.

Oh wait a minute, you mean how much time ON line, not OFF. Sorry I got that backwards.

Thank God I'm retired. I'm be fired otherwise!

travlintoes Apr 8th, 2005 07:03 PM

Patrick--you're a riot!!

liz302 Apr 8th, 2005 08:17 PM

ira-

a 48 step process, eh?

maybe i'd be better off learning to live with the addiction ;-)

mv_rd Apr 8th, 2005 08:27 PM

I took accelerated courses for school this semester and finished right before Easter so that gives me more time. I also don't work and don't have kids.

Since we're going to Italy in May, I have an excuse to be on here so much :). I do more reading than posting though. Most of my questions are usually answered by doing a search.

This board is very helpful overall and very amusing at times. Like the "discussions" over the Camilla jokes and when Scarlett wanted to go to Hell. Some of the people on here are just hilarious! ;)

alya Apr 8th, 2005 09:04 PM

My_rd

you didn't mention the posts that are too funny to be true - unfortunately they are!

With the flashy red heading I'm not able to check the Fodor's at work anymore. I sit in a cube. But soon, that won't be a problem. My contract is ending at the end of the month. So, I guess I should be looking for a job on the web. But where am I...on Fodor's. Better get some more moola for more travel.

I check when time permits...yes. It was great to do research and ask questions when I went to Paris. But, now that I'm not planning a trip anytime soon...I'm not on it as much. But I do come on and see what's everyone talking about. And see where everyone is going...

FainaAgain Sep 8th, 2005 02:50 PM

Hey, people, fess up :)

beachbum Sep 8th, 2005 03:42 PM

I thought I'd seen this before, Faina. I have to chuckle at the title. Sort of like asking an alcoholic how many drinks he's had.

peeky Sep 8th, 2005 03:55 PM

I come and go, it is hard to stop checking up on the regulars. I find so many of you amusing and informative.

beanweb24 Sep 8th, 2005 03:56 PM

I spend enough time on Fodors that my husband makes comments about "those Fodors people." I think it's gotten worse lately because I have the delusion that he's interested in hearing about funny things I read on the board (I especially enjoy Patrick's posts). Heck - if I have to listent to his recaps of the last Nats game or tennis match, then he's going to have to hear the latest Fodors drama from me. ;-)

BettyBoop Sep 8th, 2005 05:34 PM

Before my office layout had my back and monitor facing the door, I was a background fodor viewer. But since anyone passing my door can see exactly what I'm looking at, darn the colorful header, I can only safely view at lunch time. If I see a particulary catchy headline I copy the thread to my PC and read it innocently in Word.

After dinner I check in while watching Law and Order, my other healthy addiction.

I appreciate the Super Fodorites.

Tiff Sep 8th, 2005 06:03 PM

I'll admit I've built up a few frequent flyer miles.
