Tell me about Sheringham.
 

Looking for a place to get over jet lag. Thinking of taking the tube upon arrival at Heathrow and train to Sheringham. After a couple of days I thought of heading to Dunbar and then to points north. Thanks for any information or thoughts. Oh, I just like the travel between places, local bus rides and easy strolls. A couple of shots of whisky do well at a local pub in the eveing.

Can't help you much w/ Sheringham. It is right next to Cromer and I've only been through that bit once.

But do I get it right - you want to go from LHR to the north Norfolk coast, and then head back south and around to travel up to the East Lothian Coast? Seems like there might be a lot more convenient/easy places for your first stop than Sheringham.

Hi Janis; yes, back to Norwich, to Peterborough, York and up to Dunbar. I might stop at York again instead of Dunbar.I don't mind the 7 hour train trip. Actually I rather enjoy riding the rails and with my senior discount I can afford travel in 1st class. I will be doing this at the same time as my last years trip, early November. Last time I spent time in York, Oban, Melrose and Haltwhistle. Looking for something different using public transportation

No - I'm sure Sheringham is fine. it just seemed a really roundabout journey. For something along those lines w/o so much backtracking, did you consider someplace like Scarborough?

Without being disrespectfull, I have been to Scarborough and found it a bit lacking in what I like. Seemed to be like a smaller version of Blackpool, if you get my meaning. Any other thoughts? Been to Ely, but never all the way to the coast area in Sheringham, hence that pick. Just looking for something different than places that I have visited. Any thoughts on Ullapool for a couple of nights with possible bus side trips?

I've lived 14 miles from Sheringham for all my 50 years. It's a marvellous little place, absolutely nothing like a small Blackpool. You simply cannot compare Scarborough and the likes to Sheringham. My wife and I keep threatening to move there. Natives of Sheringham are known as Shannocks. Sunsets from the 'promenade ' can be fabulous. The Salvation Army band and timbrels play there on Sunday evenings in the summer although it can be as quiet as you want it. Depending on which train you catch it takes from 90 minutes to 120 minutes from London (Liverpool Street Station)to Norwich and a further 45 minutes to get from Norwich to Sheringham on the Bittern Line. (If you stop at Hoveton/Wroxham on the way you could take a trip on the Norfolk Broads?.) There's a local steam train that regularly runs from Sheringham to Wells (or perhaps Holt which is another market town well worth a visit.) If you want to travel further North by train from Sheringham you'll have to go back to Norwich where there are many options.

Thanks Janis and Selsel. Thinking of spending 3 nights. First night will be only time for a pub meal and bed. Then I can take the local steam train up to wells the second day and the next day back to Norwich and a train trip to? What do you recommend? After that I plan on a long loop up to Aberdeen area, over to Ullapool and back down south via Carlisle.

If you're really into trains there's another ' local line ' between Hoveton/Wroxham and Aylsham (yet another small market town !) but having said that there's not much there apart from Key's auction rooms. You name it, they auction it, but only on certain days of the month. (www.keysauctions.co.uk).
Another idea would be to take the hour long train trip from Norwich to Cambridge. The wife & I spent many days there whilst the daughter was at Uni. Sooooo many things to do or watch. Indeed if you did Cambridge I would suggest there would be little need for you to return to Sheringham for a third night as Cambridge & Peterborough are very close. (Assuming you use Peterborough as your 'gateway' to the North.)

Thanks Selsel, Looks like I can take a local bus service to Kings Lynn from Sheringhom as well as other possibilities. As far as Cambridge, I've been before and did enjoy the full day exploring the area. Thinking of still three nights in Sheringham and then up north. Thanks again
