Tell Me About Denmark Please

OK here is the story. We have been all over western Europe (France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Spain, Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, Holland, UK) and are considering doing Denmark and maybe Sweden together...we have 10 days of actual travel time (plus a day on each end for airplane time), so maybe. Thinking of flying into Copenhagen, spend some time, then over to Stockholm and fly out of there. Time frame is mid September.

Any advice would be welcome and comments, both "you are crazy as hell" and "wow that is wonderful" accepted.

Thanks.

We spent @5 days in Copenhagen last August pre & post cruise that included a day in Stockholm. Had a great time.
Opted to stay at the Admiral Hotel, overlooking the ferry dock area rather than down town near the Tivoli.
By the way, taking the ferry to .... (fill in the blank based on your options and the various destinations) is a long-weekend trip for locals.

In Stockholm, the Vasa Ship museum is an absolute MUST SEE. There are other museums near by which we were not able to include in our day. Also, the Gamla Stan (Old Town) is fun to stroll around.

For what it's worth, I loved Denmark and wouldn't mind going back. I must admit that I enjoyed the smaller cities and rural farflung places more than Copenhagen, but that's just me -- I usually enjoy not spending all my time in the capital. I did like Copenhagen, though -- interesting museums and architecture, nice walks, nice people, and easy day trips to castles from there. The weather was absolutely gorgeous when I went to the Louisiana Museum, so that has colored my memories. Like everything else, it's all a matter of personal preference, but no, I don't think this makes you crazy as hell!

Bob: We did 25 days in Scandinavia last year starting in Copenhagen, through Sweden, then to Norway and and back down through Denmark returning to Copenhagen for our flight home. The Copenhagen and environs, through Southern Sweden, over to Gotland Island (the medieval, walled city of Visby) and then a ferry to Stockholm makes a grand trip. Much to see and much to do. If you will tell us how much time you have, we will be happy to help you with an itinerary.

Bob, yopu're pushing the opportunities for good weather in September. I recommend a clockwise route from Copenhagen. Go west to Jutland and up to Fredrickshaven. Take the ferry over to Gothenburg. Then mosey across Sweden to Stockholm. Come down the east coast of Sweden to Kalmar then go toward Vaxjo for a stop at Boda. Then back to Copenhagen.
Before leaving Copenhagen visit Tivoli since it closes for the season in September. Jutland is an idylic land of rolling green pastures and misty little villages. Gothenburg is Sweden's second city, devoid of tourists. It played a major role in the emigration of a quarter of the Swedish population to the USA in the late 19th century. Sweden is still wild; driving across to Stockholm you see pristine pine forests and millions of huge granite stones. The resaon for swinging by Boda is the glass industry in that area. The pieces are beautiful and cost a fraction of US retail prices. In one of those villages you can visit the factory and watch the glassblowers at their craft.

Love Copenhagen. Have stayed at a hotel called the Ascot Hotel. It's about a 3-5 minute walk to Tivoli and the shopping street. Another nice area to stay in is the Nyhavn neighborhood. In Sweden, Gothenburg is an okay place but not nothing flashy. I much prefer Stockholm, Kalmar, Gotland and the glass area which is near Vaxjo in the southern part of Sweden. Love Norway, would maybe consider doing Denmark and then taking an overnight ferry up to Norway to visit the Fjords. Nothing better. Take the Norway in a Nutshell tour from Oslo to Bergen. Fantastic sights. Live in Sweden, September can be a really nice time here, but the weather can be questionable.
Happy Trails!
