I haven't tried this, but it would be nice to have a listing of the exact types of cards that have successfully been used at least once on the Trenitalia site.
My theory is that for certain types of cards in certain circumstances, there is no address authentication done, which is how the few non-Italian cards are slipping through.

Maybe you are right, WillTravel.
I first use my Marriott Visa (UK issued) to purchase with no luck. It could be TrenItalia fault or it could be cc departmet holding the process since I've tickets for Spain on the same date.
I've tried then my NatWest Mastercard, and it went through; although they used a special authorization procedure which you have to establish before your payment.
I was lucky!

Matroskin, Can you elaborate on the special authorization procedure you have to establish before your payment using NatWest Matercard?
BTW, still no reply from either our Sorrento or Madrid hotels regarding my request for them to purchase our tickets.
I did put a call into Budget Europe Travel, which I believe is part of Rail Europe. Anyway, a gentleman took my information yesterday, and told me Byron would call me back today with the best train ticket prices he can find.

You have to register your card for online transactions with the bank that gave us the card (usually you do not need that, but some sites like British Airways and apparently Trenitalia require it) and create a password 7-8 digits/letters.
When I initiated a transaction for Trenitalia, the window popped out which asked me 3,6, and 7 digit of my password. As soon as I entered, the transaction was complete.
I hope it helps.
