Teatro Dell Opera - opinions
 

Will be in Rome in October and are wanting opinions on the Teatro Dell Opera as there is a performance of L'italiana in Algeria on. Can buy tickets on-line so just checking what people's thoughts are, we are moderate opera fans, but would like to indulge in some culture on our trip.

In my view, the Rome Opera isn't the powerhouse of Italian opera it was in the 1950s & even into the 60s, but if I had the opportunity to go, I'd grab it. Also, although the outside of the opera house on Via Firenze is vintage Mussolini style (!), the interior auditorium is beautiful. You won't find Callas, Corelli & Stella anymore, but you may well have a delightful night at the opera. If the performance isn't up to snuff, you'll dine out on it! I'd go in a heartbeat.

I totally agree with the previous post. No, it's not Italy's best....but it's still pretty good!

I am wondering about the seating in
Teatro dell'Opera - where are the good seats? Is the balcony too far away for good viewing?
what about those lateral boxes? anyone know?

b Librarian, I sat in one of the boxes along the side, which I'm assuming is what you mean by lateral boxes. When I chose the seat from a seating chart, I had the impression that I had a specific assigned seat. This wasn't the case. There were four other people in the box, and it was first-come first-served as to which seat you got. I did get in the first "row," but in order to see the stage, you have to sit right up to the wall of the box and lean forward. Not good for my arthritic knees, which I need to be able to stretch out now and then! I enjoyed the opera very much but would probably splurge for a more expensive seat on the floor or the back boxes which directly face the stage.
