for a proper cup o' tea, don't bother going to the most expencive looking place. <BR>if you want to sample Englands finest cuppa, go to a back street cafe and also endulge in their cakes which have been on display since the morning! <BR>then you'll know you've been to England!

Sally Lunn's in Bath is my favorite! Have your tea, bun, clotted cream, and strawberry jam, then visit the basement to see the original-very old- kitchen, if you're lucky you might even see the ghost! I took my twelve year old son ( a history buff) there and we had a grand time.

Hey - why do all Americans think the world stops in London, come out to the country and have PROPER english teas, perfect places in Chipping Camden, Tysoe, Compton Wynates. Why stay in smelly ol cities. <BR>

I would say Betty's in Harrogate, a pretty Yorkshire market town north of Leeds, is the best place to go. It is on the dear side, so you could just have a cuppa and a cake and then take away more goodies, like the Yorkshire Fat Rascal. <BR>There is a branch in Ilkley too, which is also to the north of Leeds. Ilkley has a nice feel, nice shops and a very famous moor. Walk to the top and then feed later. Try Farsyde restaurant too if you get there.

Tea in London was one of the best things I did while visiting there this summer! The Hotel Meridien (near Piccadilly Circus) was wonderful and there was no dress code, but was still fancy and about $30. Fortnum & Mason was also wonderful, make sure to stock up on tea while you are there or at Whittard's.

I have had tea in Harrod's and Selfridges, in Fortnum&Mason's, and I consider the last the best of those three. My FAVORITE was at the little cafe in the train station in Windsor. I bought my tea and accompaning goodies and retired to a table out on the open air section of the platform. Trains do not arrive often at Windsor (end of the line station) so it is quiet most of the time. It was a lovely sunny day last November and my chair had a splendid view of the Castle overlooking the station as well as Windsor Great Park. As I sat schoolboys/choirboys from St. George's Chapel (chapel royal) wandered in to await their train home. Windsor is a wonderful country town and taking tea in its midst was marvelous.

Many thanks to all for your advice. Had tea at Fortnum & Mason's. Also ate at Betty's in York (Welsh Rarebit of course). Loved it so much we ate at Betty's in Harrogate for dinner, since we were staying there that night. We had Kir Royale for 2 in Harrogate along with the Welsh Rarebit. A lovely experience!

Does anyone know the name of a tea room in London owned by Jane Asher? I read about it in a magazine and have misplaced the magazine. Also I read about another tea room owned by Jane Pettigrew. I would greatly appreciate anyone emailing the info to me. Thanks
