Taxis in Rome
 

There are four of us going to Rome in April; should we take a taxi to our hotel near the Spanish Steps from the airport? And will it require two taxis with all our luggage? Also, will we have to take two taxis everywhere we go when we're not walking because there are four of us?

You should be able to fit 4 people in a cab; one up front with the driver. I've done this.

For transport from the airport I would recommend a shuttle service. I've used Limo Service Rome twice and was satisfied. There have been several recommendations for this shuttle service on this forum; that's where I first learned about them. You're charged a flat rate and have some one meeting you rather than waiting for a cab. If you tell them there are 4 of you and how much luggage you will have they will send an appropriate car/mini van. We tipped the driver 10%.

I had the pleasure of vacationing in Rome last summer. Since we were low on $$$, we decided to take the metro whenever possible. It is safe, cheap and easily accessible. Have a wonderful trip!

A taxi will not hold 4 people plus luggage. Organize a car service from airport to hotel. For just the 4 of you cab is fine (i sits in front). but, in Rome you should really plan on walking as much s possible - the best way to see everything.

I wouldn;t do bus or subway with 4 - it's likely to cost almost as much as taxi.

A taxi from the airport will be 40€. These days many of the taxis are like mini-vans and will easily hold four people if you don't have tons of luggage. I've used Limo Service Rome (65€ for 4 people), but Rome Shuttle Limousine gets good reviews and would be 15€ cheaper.

There are other choices beyond walking and taxis for getting around Rome. It has a metro, buses, and a very extensive tram system.

It's often alleged that Rome's Metro is of limited use. Sort of trueish, but there's a station at the Spanish Steps, while buses to their immediate vicinty are very limited, and maps of Rome's bus system are tricky to get and bloody awful. (The walk down Via Condotti to where most local bus stops are, though, takes you past Europe's best-designed shop windows). So for anywhere over a mile away, a combination of metro and bus is the usual way of getting round. Within a mile, walking is usually easiest

There's a range of season tickets, of which the 7 day €16 pass (or €11 for 3 days) for unlimited use of virtually all Rome's buses, metro and tram, plus most urban trains (but NOT the absurdly misnamed Leonardo Express, which is the most frequently used train to FCO) is probably the most useful for most tourists. Buy it at any metro station

There is also a Roma Pass, one version of which gives the same unlimited use of most Rome public transport plus two free admissions to civic or State-run museums and major, and subsequent discounted admission. This does NOT include other museums or sites, such as those operated by the Vatican (surprisingly many, often a long way from Vatican City). Worth taking a few minutes to calculate which suit your purposes best.

I really wouldn't waste money on taxis at all. Rome's small, its public transport OK, if shabby, and services like Rome Shuttle much cheaper to get to and from FCO than cabs.

Ditto, flanneruk. I was in Rome in Nov (solo) and the only taxis I took were from rail station to hotel at Spanish Steps and then from hotel to airport. Unless someone in the group has trouble walking, you shd be able to stroll almost everywhere. The only place too far for me to walk was St. Paul's outside the walls and I guess if you wanted to do catacombs. Be aware that there is a great people-mover in the Metro station by the Spanish Steps if you want to go over to the Borghese Gardens/Via Veneto area.
