I've been using the public transportation from the airport to the Mabillon station,in the 6th, for decades and with luggage. The only time I take a taxi is when I take my mom along or once, a few years ago, when friends came along and insisted on a taxi...which was silly...as all of their luggage had been lost so they had absolutely nothing to carry whereas I had two suitcases and had no problem in wanting to take the train/metro. So, it's all a personal choice. Happy Travels!

To combine economical with pleasant views, the Roissybus and Air France Bus are good options. The Roissybus has a drop off near Opera (Garnier). From there you can access multiple metro lines (f0r example to Sentier) Cost is 8,60 euro one way.

The Air France bus (note, not at all limited to Air France customers)
has multiple drop-offs, all with Metro access (Montparnasse, Invalides, Gare de Lyon, Porte Maillot, Arc de Triomphe) So you can access Left and Right bank. Cost is 14 euro one way

Both run early to late.

I don't have an opinion one way or the other, but as others mentioned one ticket will do it. Also getting to Saint-Germain-des-Prés isn't that difficult. A fairly painless switch can be made from RER-B to Metro Line 4 at either Châtelet - Les Halles or Saint-Michel.
