Taxi rates in Rome?
 

I'm posting this for my in-laws who are trying to finalize some details for their trip to Rome. They were wondering if anyone could give an estimate of the cost of taking a taxi from the Pantheon to the Vatican?

It depends on traffic and the honesty of the taxidriver.
In 2003 I took a taxi from Termini Train Station to St. Peter's Basilica before the morning rush and it was 7.39e.
Last March my knee was bothering me so I took a few taxi rides. Termini to the Roman Forum, Colosseum to Termini was just over 4e. Termini to the Largo di Torre Argentina was just over 5e.

So if you look at a map at these distances you can get an idea of the cost.

But for a ballpark figure I'd say 6e. Regards, Walter

Best policy in these areas is to ask the driver how much it will be to get you from point A to point B. They will have a very good idea and it you like the price, go for it. It will also avoid them taking you for a "ride".

The subway is best to get around in Rome if you can avoid the pickpockets. It actually gets you places quicker because of the traffic on the city streets. Rome is one of the few towns in Europe I will never again drive on my own again. Simply not worth the hassle.

Have them grab a bus, it's very easy and convenient. Taxi's between that area should average around 6-7E.

It shouldn't be more than 4E. They are actually fairly close together. I did a walking tour that started just a block south of St. Peters and ended at the Panethon. I would be surprised if it was much over a mile.

Catch the taxis if you are not on a limited budget. Much easier and a time saver and hassle free experience. In Jan. we did not take any taxi that was more than 6 euros from the Pantheon area. I think it was around 5 euros to the Vatican from the Pantheon area.
All taxi drivers we found were very honest and helpful. Most spoke good English.

A taxi was always just under 5 euro regardless of where we (4 of us) went (even though it is based on distance/time after the initial fee). I should say that we were never in stopped or slow traffic, however.

Be sure to tell your in-laws to check the taxi meter and make sure it's been reset for their pick-up. Even tho' I thought I always looked we got ripped off by a "very nice guy." Paid at least double the rate. Happened to my friend again later in our trip. Wish it wasn't so but there are some really awful people out there.

I have never been ripped off by an official, metered taxi driver in Rome, so maybe I have been really lucky.

I took a taxi from Largo Argentina (just a few blocks from the Pantheon, and a major transit hub with a large taxi stand) to St Peter's and it was about 6 euros. On the same street is, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, along which the bus runs, but if it were my in-laws, I would tell them to take the taxi. Yes, the bus is easy, but the taxi is easier. Just my opinion!

I found that taking taxis weas by far the best was to go. I took a taxi from the Piazza Della Republica to the Vatican Museum, less than 15 minutes cost 11 euro. Most of my rides were 6-8 euros.

Advantages to taxis. Get there faster, easier to find your way around than deciphering schedules, no tranfers, less chance of pickpockets, if you share the ride with other guests you can split the bill.
