Taxi From Gatwick to Lewisham

My wife and I are wondering what the price of a taxi would be from Gatwick airport to Lewisham?

Cool site!

But a car service would be substantially cheaper then that

The recommended website is a masterpiece of utterly useless accuracy.

Gatwick is awash with signs telling you not to get a cab off the rank into London: only someone blind, illiterate and feckless would ignore them. The absurd site referred to assumes you're all three - and can't be arsed telling you what you ought to do (it's American, of course: what do you expect?)

A prebooked car (google either "justairports" to see their competitors, or "taxi gatwick") will cost around £40.

Still a great deal more - and at least twice as time-consuming - as getting the First Capital Connect train to London Bridge, then a train back to Lewisham.

I believe that the OP posted a simple question:

My wife and I are wondering what the price of a taxi would be from Gatwick airport to Lewisham?

The OP did not ask for the best option, a cheaper option, whatever.

So I posted a link that would tells them how much a taxi would cost.

Whether you agree with this option or not is irrelevant.

about 80% of the folks who ask the cost of a taxi from LHR or LGW - it turns out they didn't know there are other options.

I personally think it would be mean to answer that question w/o at LEAST telling them a taxi is the most expensive option.

AAFrequentFlyer Jan 17th, 2009 11:27 AM

It is very possible that after discovering how much a regular taxi will cost the OP may come back and ask for better option.

We don't know the reason why the OP asked for taxi rates, do we?

It is also possible the OP doesn't care about any other option.

The OP asked a simple question. AAFF gave a simple and correct answer.

If any of you want to elaborate further, feel free to do so. But no one should criticize AAFF for giving a precise and accurate answer.

Regardless...I'm just going to add
www.justairports.com in case they need a cheaper option than a regular taxi (we had a heart attack when we found out how expensive it was). We've used this car service twice and they were great!

no one criticized AAFF - it was the worldtaximeter website that got slapped about. It isn't terribly accurate/useful.

Robespierre Jan 17th, 2009 01:24 PM

There is no guarantee that the OP will come back because the price is too high. How this kind of question should be answered.

That would be £178.95 [or whatever - I didn't look it up], but if budget is a consideration, you should know that there are far cheaper alternatives.

I tried that site for LAX to my home, and it seems pretty accurate. It's a tool, and I think it's pretty cool. How one uses it (like any other TOOL in the universe) is another question.

There's another factor: other people read these messages besides the people who ask the question.

I would have suggested the train option too, but with the caveat that it may well involve changing platforms at London Bridge - but at least (for those with wheeled luggage) there are slopes rather than steps.

I tried that site from where I live to Gatwick (approx 25 km) and it was 3x the actual cost that I pay. Even taking out the waiting in traffic time it is still well over double the cost.

As someone who lives a short walk from Lewisham can I ask what on earth is making you go there? Do you have a travel agent with a sick sense of humour?

Here's another possibility: Get the gatwick express or the other train to Victoria. Take the short walk outside to the bus stands and get the 185 bus which will take you to lewisham (it takes about an hour, but there's no steps etc.)
