Tarragona
 

We will probably go to Barcelona next year, but have not been to Tarragona. It seems an overnight trip would be worthwhile as two of us like to stop and draw and examine what we see, rather than rush through things. We have great interest in Roman architecture and ruins.

So would a relatively early trip from Barcelona one day and a later afternoon trip back the next seem like sufficient time for intentional dawdlers?

Don't know - never stayed in Tarragona just went thru it on train but remember that relocating takes a lot of time - dawdling time wasted. quite a lovely historic area. I think your timing is sufficient. we were there only one night and one day and felt we had a good feel for it.

RENFE is like a relative you must invite but hate to deal with. I tried Seat61 last time who put through to Loco which was not much better than RENFE. The trains are fine, it is purchasing the tickets on-line that is maddening.

If we go, it will mean that have been to Barcelona at least once every decade since the 1970's.

We made it a day trip... a very nice spot....only an hour from Barcelona.
The only problem was on the way back ( it was Sunday) the train was
packed with students retuning to Barcelona ( from visiting family in various towns on the coast )
We had to stand all the way.

Staying overnight would for sure be worthwhile. The atmosphere in the evening is wonderful. I especially love being in Placa del Forum, all the bars around the perimeter filled with folks socializing, while all the kids play in the middle.

You don't need to relocate - lodgings can be so reasonable in Tarragona, you can leave most of your stuff in Barcelona and just bring a toothbrush.

There are a lot of annual festivals in Tarragona including a Roman festival (Tarraco Viva.) It is in May. Not sure the time of year you plan to go but if you are flexible and really into Roman history.... well maybe you would need more than an overnight for it. :)

Tarragona has four teams of Castellers (human towers) so there are often exhibitions and competitions on the weekends.

We loved Tarragona and spent 2 nights there but about day and half seeing sights. We had a car, though, from Barcelona, but we did not need a car in the city.

We stayed at Husa Imperial Tárraco overlooking the Mediterranean; it was quite fine.
