Tarasp or Dolomites, Swiss National Park?
In late August we'll be staying 4 nights at Waldhaus in Sils, and 2 nights at Palazzo Salis in Soglio. We have 2 other nights unbooked, any opinions on whether we stay in Tarasp at Schlosshotel Chaste, or go over to the Dolomites? Scenery and walking/hiking a priority.
Is the Swiss National Park worth seeing? |
I think I said it before: The Swiss National Park is not really special in regards to views. The scenery in the Upper Engadine or the Bregaglia valley is MUCH more spectacular.
I personally don't care much for the Dolomites but others here do. It depends on the rest of your itinerary - it takes at least three hours to drive to the Dolomites (and more to the centre of the Dolomites); I don't think it's really worth the effort for just two nights. I. |
We visited both areas last year and enjoyed the Dolomites more than the Engadine, but we are not hikers. Here are some pics from that trip--we stayed at Guarda but visted the Castle at Tarasp and had lunch in Soglio.

Hi,
The Vinschgau/Val Venosta of Italy's South Tirol region may be of interest to you. Beautiful mountain scenery, vineyards and plenty of castles plus the smallest walled medieval town in the South Tirol... Glurns/Glorenza. This area is just over the Swiss/Italian border from Switzerland's Val Muestair. http://www.suedtirolerland.it/en/sou...s/val-venosta/ www.vinschgau-suedtirol.info We stayed in Mals/Malles at the Hotel Panorama and can highly recommend it. www.biohotel-panorama.it Nearby Churbug Castle/ Castel Coira in Schluderns is fantastic. www.churburg.com/index_en.htm Paul |
Both areas are beautiful. But if you stay at the Schlosshotel Chaste, then make sure to have dinner there. The food is wonderful!

Stay at Castelrotto (Kastelruth). Go to Seiseralm and enjoy a scenery different than the Engadine. I'd definitely do it. There's a gorgeous circular drive that takes you through some very dramatic scenery in the dolomites. Might want to consider that too.

Thanks everyone, still haven't made up my mind!
Wooders101 ~ did you do any hiking or walking Schlosshotel Chaste? If we stay there we will definitely eat dinners there. Hi schuler, what's the route of the circular drive? Have a favorite place to stay? |
Steve James has lots of excellent info on the Dolomites.
You'll hear opinions divided on staying in Ortisei or Castelrotto. I stayed in Ortisei, and although it's a quaint, bustling town, I prefered the views and meadows of Castlerotto. To each his own. Can't help you on hotels. |
