Taranto- ive been offered a week, should I go?
I need to know if Taranto is a place I can base myself, husband and 2 daughters for a week. Wondering what is in the area and do we need a car? We are going on timeshare and must make a decision in the next 24 hours. Help is appreciated

Taranto itself is not the most picturesque town. Besides the cathedral and the old quarter, there isn't too much to see in the town itself. But you can easily make daytrips to Bari, Alberobello etc. so do get a car.

Hi G,
Look up Taranto at www.viamichelin.com
The Green Guide lists 10 places of interest, one of which has 3*.
You will want a car, I think.

Hi, anabelle -
I didn't visit Taranto, but enjoyed my time in Trani, Alberobello, and Lecce (plus dinner in Polignano a Mare) (and also a day just outside of Puglia in Matera). I travelled without a car, and since I believe Taranto is on the FSE trainline, I imagine that you could manage without a car if that is your preference.
Hope that helps!

Seems the timeshare is near the beach a place called Castellaneta, so maybe its just outside of Taranto I haven't been able to locate it on a map. Anyone know where this is? Thanks alot

Sure---about :30 from Taranto in the middle of countryside, but there is also a "Marina" of the same name on the water. You would be within an hour of Alberobello, Martina Franca, and Matera for good day trips. Absolutely you will need a car--probaly a wagon with 4 of you.

Hi, tuscanlifeedit -
I traveled to Matera from Salerno by bus - search this web-site for a post titled "Matera" and look for Steve_James's response - his directions were perfect (thanks, Steve_James!).
I traveled from Matera to Bari by train. I used the trenitalia web-site to identify train options.
Matera is really an amazing place; if you go, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
Hope that helps (and hope anabelle doesn't mind this side discussion)!
