Tapas in Barcelona
 

I will be traveling to Barcelona this weekend for 5 days and I am super excited. However, I do not eat any pork or beef therefore I am a bit worried about trying the tapas. I realize there are many tapas that are vegetarian, sea-food or chicken based but I can't seem to find any names. Can anyone please recommend some they like for me? thank you very much!!

You don't need to have a name for a dish and often restaurants give food their own names. Look at the menu or at the tapas and choose one.

At home (US) restaurants have unique names for chicken dishes, even when they're made with the same ingredients. So one restaurant may call chicken with mozzarella and tomatoes chicken milanese; another restaurant may call the same dish chicken a la casa.

I can't imagine memorizing names for dishes so I can't give you any name of tapas I had in Barcelona - sorry. I do think you're making too much of this. It will all be revealed when you look at the tapas and/or read the menu description.

Thank you for the response. I guess I assumed they wouldn't necessarily come with pictures and with no knowledge of Spanish it might get a bit confusing. You're right, I am probably thinking too much into it :).

Memorize this and say it when ordering:

<b>Tiene tapas con pollo o mariscos? Yo no como carne de cerdo o carne de res.</b> (Do you have tapas with chicken or seafood? I do not eat pork or beef.)

There are more tapas that do not have meat than do.

You are not alone!

The best tapas I had in Barcelona were in small, divey places and I have no idea what the tapas were called and don't care. I speak neither Spanish nor Catalan and had no problem - I never went hungry.

No, most of the time you pop into a unknown tasca, but people do have their favorites.

The last time I went to Cal Pep I had perfectly preapred sea bass, the problem was that I ordered percebes. My Sapnish was so got the wrong thing.

Another vote for quite expensive and fun Cal Pep. The fish and seafood tapas - as well as the tortilla with aioli!!! - are excellent. In Plaça de les Olles, 8 in El Born with lots of other fine tapas bars and cafés around. Also plenty of great tapas bars in the nice and non-touristy Poble Sec. Close to several fine theaters and at the foot of famous Montjuic (Jewish mountain). Nope - we loved doing that too when we were in Barcelona last June.

I recommend La Tasqueta De Blai which has pintxos all out on the bar, a euro a piece, and tons of veggie ones, like roasted courgette on brie, mascarpone and bramble jelly, chilled tomato soup and fritata.
