tangier

Is Tangier worth a day trip only? Please give reasons. We are considering taking it off our itineray; two folks are in favor of this and two would like to visit . Thoughts please.

Tidy:
As a Morocco fan, I suggest you don't. If you had the time and desire to visit the country in a certain amount of depth I'd highly recommened it. While there's no denying that Tangiers is a slight, but seedy, introductory taste of Maroc, there's the time, money and effort to ferry over. I know from personal experience that the Algeciras route occasionally runs into rough seas at the destination port (Tangiers), enough to cause a significant delay before being cleared to dock. This may also be true from the other lines (Tarifa, Malaga) as well. Suggest you save it for another time when Maroc can be your main destination...an exotic and fascinating one.

One other thing, although the country does have its overbearing "touts" everywhere, you'll find that in a concentrated area where ferry daytrippers congegate, like Tangiers markets, etc...you'll be targeted and annoyingly pestered throughout your short stay, IMO.

I would do it as a day trip because I'd rather see a little bit of a country than none at all. For me it would be worth the hassle, but not everyone agrees and I respect that.

For example, when I went to Hong Kong several years ago I did a day trip to China. Some companions pooh-poohed the trip, saying I should save it for another time when I could visit China in depth. I ignored them, went to China for the day, and it was one of the highlights of my trip. (I did make it back to China for 12 days, but not until a few years later).

I've been to Morocco for 10 days as part of a Spain, Portugal Morocco trip. I think the comparison of Tangiers:Morocco versus Tijuana:Mexico is a pretty good one. But...I still recommend it,particularly if you hire a private guide upon arrival.

Here's a tripadvisor thread with 38 replies that gives a variety of perspectives on a day trip to Tangier. It's a little old, but the responses are still accurate IMO.

As with most travel, there are no right or wrong answers--only what's right or wrong for you. Good luck!

We've been to Morocco several times and ahve also done a day trip from Spain to Tangiers. We'd booked it as a trip from our hotel in Marbella. We were taken to Tarifa for the ferry by coach, the crossing was a bit rough and we were met by another coach in Tangiers.

We were pestered by touts selling most things for the duration of the day and the tour included what seems to be the obligatory carpet sellers presentation. We had no intention of buying a rug so we waited outside, but had to go back in to avoid the touts again!

Tangier itself is unremarkable, dirty and I wouldn't want to go back.
