Tallinn - things to do and see???
 

Hi everyone, <BR>can anyone out there recommend anything to see and do in Tallinn. If not any comments from anyone who has been there would be great, just generally on what the place is like. <BR>thanks very much...

Hi Vee: I was there in 1990, how's that for providing you with current information? We had a wonderful time there. The people were a pleasure to interact with, the beach areas away from town were very pleasant. The town was beautiful, parts of the old town are up on a hill with small interesting streets, plazas, and places to sit out and enjoy the summertime. At that time, the Soviet Union was still intact. We had just come from a conference in St.Petersburg/Leningrad and I recall being very impressed with the contrast between the two countries. The industriousness of the people in Tallinn and their patriotism for their country was very apparent. There is a phenomenal festival with singing and pageantry that a recall is held in a large outdoor ampitheatre but I don't recall the frequency. Don't know if there is someone out there who is more current than I and more familiar than I with the country who could respond but we enjoyed our stay there.

Hello. I was in Tallinn last June. I am planning to return this summer so that my two children can enjoy it. Tallinn was a wonderful city for strolling and enjoying the medieval atmosphere. We took a walking/bus tour of the area and really enjoyed it. Our guide was a very knowledgable college professor. We especially enjoyed the many small museums.

Tallinn is very nice place just to walk around in the old medieval part of the city. In the summer there usually are a lot of tourists though. Also, probably the Song Festival Ground is worth a visit (although the Song Festivals itself only take place every four years - I think). <BR>If you have more time you can spend half the day at the Folklore Museum at Rocca al Mare (about 20 minutes drive from the city centre). There are tens and tens of cottage style buildings, mills, wells etc from the 18-19 centuries transported there from all over Estonia that really demonstrate well the lifestyle of Estonians several centuries back. <BR> <BR>You can also check their web-page at http://www.tallinn.ee. <BR> <BR>

Took a hydrofoil there for a daytrip from Helsinki and highly recommend it for those who may not know it is available. You get a nice overview of a fascinating city.

The best thing to do - walk the old city, check every door on the streets, they might be entrances to some super ethnic restaurant, or bar. Very charming atmosphere.
