Taking the metro in Rome

Our hotel is near a metro stop and we would like to use it as much as possible. Since we live in the DC area we know how it works here but want to be familiar with how it works in Rome. Is there a set amount to ride the whole "line" or do you pay by the distance as we do here? When you buy at ticket at one of the local shops, will they tell you how much you should purchase for your trip? Thanks.

Take a look at this for all the details you probably need:

Or look at the excellent transport info provided by the tour company Enjoy Rome, at:

Or take a look at the metro's website www.atac.roma.it You can purchase timed, daily or weekly tickets.

Thank you everyone. The enjoyrome site was the most helpful but they all had something I can use.
