We are going to Europe next month. Like Emily SD's husband I like my soft drinks - Diet Coke for me. I can't imagine paying 3 Euros for one.

When we travel in this country we always go to a grocery store or CVS and stock up on drinks and snacks. Will that work in Europe?

Is there no ice machines in hotels? Does everyone drink their drinks hot?

My daughter has already suggested we buy packets of Crystal Light to mix with water. Is bottled water as expensive as soft drinks?

learn how to say a "jug of tap water, please" in the language where you are going.

beware.. in germany it was almost impossible. only the upscale restaurants would bring it surprisingly. but the pubs would just open up a bottle and say they didn't serve tap water.

i asked them if they were concerned there water was undrinkable.?
i must add that we were always buying food, too. a bit irritating.

i wish i liked beer. it was cheaper than my water.

i think bottled water is the biggest gimmick going worldwide in civilized countries.

also there seem to be lots of fruit juice drinks as well.

Hi EM

A jar of peanut butter takes up room and saltines are easily crushed. I suggest getting a box of peanut butter crackers.

>..we will get funny looks if we order iced-tea or Coke at dinner?<

No. Although I'm not sure that you will find iced tea in restaurants.

Hi MLM,

>..we always go to a grocery store or CVS and stock up on drinks and snacks. Will that work in Europe? <

Yes

Hi lin,

>...i think bottled water is the biggest gimmick going worldwide in civilized countries.<

You can buy 6 packs of 2L bottles in grocery stores for about 1/8 the cost of getting 0.5L bottles on the street.

<<Diet Coke for me. I can't imagine paying 3 Euros for one.>>

mlm59- then now you're really gonna cry because they don't have Diet Coke... it's "coke light" instead.

Ice machines are not common, at least I haven't seen them in the 3-star places I've stayed.

Bottled water (bought at a grocery store) is not expensive.

DH and I ate Hot Dogs, Pringles and Coke for lunch under the Tower of Pisa. You can get junk food anywhere.
