Taking a Swedish Hire Car to Norway...?

We seem to be hitting snags when attempting to book a hire car in Stockholm for 16 days, return it to the same pick-up but during that time take it into Norway for a week. Either the car companies will not allow it, or we have to book THEN ask if we can take it into Norway, or the price we have obtained seems very expensive. Many people must do this so has anyone a website/car company which offers this at a reasonable price? Thank you

Try www.autoeurope.com or www.kemwel.com if you have not done so already. You can book and cancel with no penalty up to three days before pick-up time, which will give you enough time to iron out any variables that you anticipate in the rental.

Under Insurance and Rental Info, on the Sixt site (as an example), they state their rules on cross border rentals for rentals originating in Sweden. I've often rented a car in Sweden and travelled to Denmark and v.v., I don't think cross border rentals into other Scandinavian countries is unusual. If you are calling a central reservation office they often do not know the local rental rules.

Lulu, we ran into this exact problem last year - the price to cross into Sweden from Norway was ASTRONOMICAL!

We ended up flying form Oslo - Stockholm and renting a car at the airport. Wasn't my Plan A, but I made it work....

No great advice, other than think flexible. Can you take a train over the border and then rent a car?

Thank you to all for your helpful replies. After some emailing to and fro, finally found Nova Car Hire who had no problem with us taking car into Norway and no extra charges.

The reason for the reluctance may be due to the road tolls in Norway - if the car isn't registered to pay automatically then the car hire company may end up stuck with the bill.
