Taking a perscribed controlled substance to Germany.
 

Hey! I have done a lot of searching on the internet the last few days on this topic, but can't seem to get a clear answer.

Last week I was prescribed Hydrocodone(norco) because of Kidney Stones.

I'm planning to bring the medication in the original bottles that clearly have my name on them.

My question, however, comes from it being such a tightly regulated substance. Wikipedia says "In Germany, hydrocodone is no longer available for medical use. Hydrocodone is listed under the Betäubungsmittelgesetz as a Suchtgift in the same category as morphine."

Because of that, I'm worried about getting through customs. Even if it's not available for medical use, will they allow an American with the proper prescription to take it in with a proper amount of pills?(14 for a 18 day trip)

Since a kidney stone is so extremely painful, I need to know for sure what I'm doing wont lead to confiscation.

As an experienced kidney-stone patient I can recommend you Buscopan or Buscopan plus as an useful substitute medicine. It works anticonvulsing and pain-relieving.
In Germany you get it without prescription but it is available only in pharmacies. By the way Buscopan can cause regurgitation. Don`t take it after your meals. Otherwise your Hamburger has gone. I only take it in case of a colic.

I hope lampls comes back and tells us if they got a response from the German customs regarding this. I am sure it will be helpful to others travelling to Germany, if not to other countries in Europe where this medicine is restricted/banned.

I also have chronic kidney stones and have oxycodone (Vicodin) with me on my travels, though 800mg of ibuprofen gets me through all but the very worst. I have never had my medicine bag searched.

It is ironic that countries that allow OTC access to codeine -- I don't know if Germany is among them -- have demonized Vicodin. I will explore Buscopan with my urologist.
