Switzerland...places to visit

I'll be visiting Switzerland (Lausanne)in October for a business program and will have a couple of free days over there. Can anyone recommend any place that will be "a must" to see in Switzerland.
Txs

Well, in my opinion the whole country is a must, but from Lausanne, I'd head to Zermatt and hope for clear weather. Seeing the Matterhorn up close is breathtaking. And you can do a nice train trip up the adjacent mountain for a closer look.

C\Good evening, Carl_a
Patricks' idea for Zermatt is a very good one, you have the various cable cars from Furi (gondola from Winkelmatten Very close to the Matterhorn at Schwarzersee. Up to Kleine Matterhorn, rather igh. Uper the Gonergrat for another excellant view of the Matterhorn and also Monte Rosa..However Zermatt is a very quite town on Sundays. But with good hotels and ristorantes. Another possibility if thru Interlaken and the Berneroberland, Jungfrau, Grindelwald
very good choices along with Murren and the Schlithorn, Possible more to do in the BO than Zeermatt Some hotels close about this time and reopen at ski season.. Richard of LaGrange Park, IL.

The towns right next to Lausanne along the lake are absolutely lovely... Vevey and Montreux.

Do a search using those two town names here on Fodors... there were several posters (including myself) who just returned from vacationing in that area and we asked questions, received great suggestions, and generally shared ALOT of information on the area.

Another place you might consider is Interlaken, with a train trip to the beautiful scenery around the Jungfrau. Bucherer has a nice clock shop there as well.

You might also consider going to Montreux with a visit to the nearby Chillon castle.

The railtrip up to Zermatt (changing in Brig) as was mentioned earlier can be wonderful..the scenery between Brig and Zermatt is pretty spectacular.

Another possibility is the rail trip from Montreux up to Rochers de Naye..the trip up is pretty spectacular; the views from the top out over Lac Leman are nothing short of breathtaking.
