Switzerland to Italy by car

Will be driving from Switzerland to Italy on August 10th. Thinking of trying the Simplon Tunnel and car train.
Has anyone done this? or, is anyone able to recommend a route avoiding the more popular routes?
Many thanks for your help.

How about going up and over the Simplon Pass - the road ain't at all freaky or tough though of course a bit serpentine as it corkscrews up and down but at the summit there is an out of this world look and feeling and the descent via Gondo to Domodossola is so so sweet - in the tunnel you obviously see nothing.

I've done the pass road several times and it is fantastic!

Will be coming from Strasbourg to Lake Garda so can be flexible.
Last time we drove the simplon pass to find it shut because of falling rocks (which when we saw them fall we thought was fair enough as some were the size of cars!)
Have done Mont Blanc and Gothard but at this time of year the queues justify a longer route where we can keep rolling.
Thank you for suggestions so far.

What about Strasbourg - Schramberg - Rottweil - Konstanz - Buchs SG - Fluelapass - Ofenpass - Vinschgau - Bolzano/Bozen - Rovereto - Riva del Garda?
