switzerland to Italy by car

Hello travellers,
we will be touring by road from Zurich to Italy with 6 people for about 3- 4 weeks. We are wanting to hire a people mover maybe 6 - 8 seater and enough luggage space. Anyone done this? and also we are wanting a cheap reliable hire company. We did this two years ago but with only four people and we had our own car.

Car hire is very expensive in Switzerland, so it will be cheaper to hire, say, in Germany or France. There may be some cross-border fee to pay, depending on hire company. To have enough luggage space with 6 passengers, you need a 8-9 seater which will be expensive as well as being unwieldy on narrow mountain roads. Hiring two normal cars may work out cheaper and more convenient.

Don't forget your Swiss vignette!

Picking up in Switzerland and dropping off in another country will cost a small fortune. There are 7-person vans and 9-person vans; those are the largest you'll be able to rent with a normal license. Both will be limited in terms of luggage space, so don't go hauling big suitcases. Neither will be easy to navigate on small town roads. Neither will be easy to find parking for, and if you do find it, it will be expensive. Nothing you're contemplating will be "cheap."

You want to lease and not rent--if you can find a vehicle that is big enough.
For that period of time it will be much cheaper, and you can drop in Rome.

Will you drive directly from ZRH to the Swiss/Italian border (2 3/4 hrs) or do you plan some stopovers in Switzerland?
Or do you plan a loop with start and end in ZRH?
