Switzerland - things to see

I am headed to Switzerland this summer as well as some other countries in Europe. What are several of the most spectacular things to see in Switzerland? I heard there is a great cable car to take near Chamonix...does anyone know about this?

I haven't been to Chamonix, but I have been to Zermatt twice and highly recommend it. It's a very charming village with spectacular scenery, especially famous for the Matterhorn. You can go up the Klein Matterhorn, which is the highest ski lift in Europe, for some amazing views. There is a great informational site on Zermatt at www.ski-zermatt.com. Thanks for the list of web pages on Switzerland.
Very timely.
Interest how one question and one set of responses
helps so many different people.

Richard has really hit all the great spots. As to my own experience.....I like the Bernese Oberland area of the Jungfrau hands down. Wengen Murren and Gimmlewald (different from Grindlewald). So much to see and do in this area and all of Switzerland, so just hit a few spots to get the feeling of the country and its people. BYE
Try to squeeze in Interlaken/Brienz area, and Jungfrau. Beautiful, also the lakes region on Italian side. Gruyere is pretty too.

Richard seems to be very informed about Switzerland.
Can you tell me is it better to drive or travel by rail to see all that you recommended? What is the difference between first and second class on the trains? And, last, can you get away without a tie and jacket at dinner in Geneva or Zurich? Thank you for any answers you can give. Kathy
