Switzerland! Lucerne Wengen & Montreux accomm recommendations please
We will be travelling in Switzerland on an 8 day Swiss train pass in September. Can't wait.
Spending 2 nights in Lucerne
4 nights in Wengen
1 night in Montreux
Would love accommodation suggestions. I realise that Switzerland is expensive but would like middle of the road suggestions. We do not need 4/5 star but good locations.
I look forward to your suggestions.

OK, since you say 4/5 star isn't required you could look at somewhere like the (Best Western) Flora which is about a 2-block walk from the main rail station and also an easy walk to the bridge/river/Jesuit Church, etc. We have used it in the past and found it very acceptable
It is a place that is sometimes used by coach tour groups so be aware of that.
Normally we stay in the Des Balances but that is probably out of your desired price range.
You can also look at this site for "budget" accommodations www.rooms.ch
Don't worry, you'll get PLENTY of hotel recommendations from others regarding this city.

My favourite Hotel in Luzern is the Montana. It is high on a hill overlooking the lake.
For Wengen I always stay with Judi and Andi at the Minotel Bellevue. The views of Lauterbrunnen Valley are unparalleled. This is not a luxury hotel by any means but the view is one of the best in the entire world.
Another good hotel is the Schonegg.

Hi aussie_10,
It would be better if you could give us some kind of a solid figure for your price preference, as everyone has a different idea of what "middle of the road" is.
I've stayed in Montreux about 14 times since 1995, and I've never chosen to stay at the Masson (though I did come close two times). For me, it just sits too far inland, and it's too far from the center of town.
I stay in an apartment there these days, but if I didn't, I would consider staying at the Hostellerie Bon Rivage. Though it sits in La Tour-de-Peilz and not in Montreux, it is right on the lake:
http://www.bon-rivage.ch/
If you choose to stay there, you'll get a free bus pass and can be in Montreux in about 10 minutes.
Another option might be the B&B La Rouvenaz, which sits across the street from the lake but in the center of town. However, if it's warm and you have to open the windows, it could be noisy -- it sits on the very busy main street, and the restaurant is very popular.

Anyway, have fun as you plan!

Thanks for the recommendations
Hotel Flora in Lucerne looks like a good location, can get a non refundable room for about $225 per night. Probably a hotel not too far from the train station would be best.
Minotel Bellevue Wengen looks like a good option. What about hotel edelweiss looks ok as well?
B&b La Rouvenaz Monteux is already booked.
Any more recommendations most appreciated.

Hotel Baeren in Wengen. The Edelweiss is located just behind Hotel Baeren. I have never stayed there, but I know the rates are good. To get to both you would walk to your right out of the train station, then down past Coop and walk under an overpass and down a hill. No problem going down. Coming up is kinda steep, not bad. I have stayed at the Baeren several times and I have no problems. And for the record, I am a 65 year old female.

In Lucerne we like the IBIS Styles hotel, which is a short walk to the old city/shopping area. We prefer to be on the 'old' side of the lake/river rather than the train station side. We will be at the Grand National this weekend, but I know for sure that it is out of your price range. It's a splurge for us for a couple of nights.

Just thought of another place for Lucerne. Look at the Hotel de la Paix. We stayed there once, when IBIS was booked out. It is just steps from the entrance to the old town area on the 'old' side of the lake/river.

Thank you for the suggestions.
The main reason for choosing a hotel in Lucerne near the train station was because we don't arrive into Lucerne until 9pm.
However staying on the other side of the lake would be nice. Simpsonc I have had a look at the Ibis and Hotel de la Paix, good options. I also saw Hotel des Alpes looks ok?
Whilst in Lucerne the only must was a boat trip on the lake so location is flexible we are in our 50s and active, so walking does not worry us. But with 6 weeks in Europe will have suitcases to lug from the train station.
Wengen, we have 4 nights here and although we don't have to have luxury, we do want to be comfortable, we would like somewhere with a nice view and good location for getting about.
Scatcat I will look at Hotel Baeren.

"Whilst in Lucerne the only must was a boat trip"
There are lakes with historic steamboats all over Switzerland, at Montreux and Interlaken too.
There is more to do at Lucerne than a bot trip:
guided walk (in English) through the historic city center
Swiss Transport Museum
Rosengart Collection
Pilatus cog railway (steepest of the world)
Stanserhron gondola with open upper deck
Excursion by train and bus to Ballenberg Swiss Village Museum
etc. etc.

Thanks for the suggestions neckervd
I have been to the library to pick up some Switzerland guide books to do some more reading.
But I always like to get personal recommendations. Some great ideas you have given.
I should have clarified the boat mention. Somewhere along that area I would like to do a boat trip on one of the beautiful Swiss lakes.

Hi Aussie,
We visited Switzerland last summer on the swiss train pass - you will have an AMAZING time!!!!
We stayed at the Hotel Pickwick in Lucerne: http://www.hotelpickwick.ch/english/
Really great location, right on the river bank and close to the train station too.
Highly recommend the Pilatus cog railway - views from up there are breathtaking!!!
Have a great time

Pumzika thanks for your hotel recommendation. And the link to the hotel pick wick. It is indeed right on the water. I will do some further research. Glad you loved Switzerland.
Neckervd thank you for all the links also. I will look them all up.
The more I read about visiting Switzerland the more I can't wait! And the more decisions to make!

We too are going in September -- booked Hotel Masson in Montreux total for two nights w/ breakfast = $460. Friends of ours were there about 5 years ago w/ daughter who resides in Switzerland and they loved its convenience for walking. Think you've gotten enough input for other cities.
