Switzerland/Italy for 2 weeks in July

Our family of four will travel Switzerland and Italy for 2 weeks this July. Our 16 yo daughter is currently in Switzerland and we expect that she will have our agenda for CH but we would like to explore Italy. Destinations on our list are Rome, Florence and Venice. We will rent a car at least for the Italian portion of the trip. We are wondering if it makes sense to night train down to Rome and then once we are done in Rome, to get our car and head north. How many days do we need to see those three destinations? (keeping in mind that we are restricted in overall days) We are not completely opposed to eliminating one centre but don't want to. Ultimately I am thinking if we had to, I would eliminate Venice. Thoughts??

There are no night trains from Switzerland to Italy. You don't want a car in Rome, Florence or Venice. Rome and Florence (any many other towns in Italy including tiny hill towns) have restricted zones (ZTL) where you aren't allowed to drive unless you are a resident. What areas do you think you want to see that might require a car?
