Switzerland Honeymoon Help
Hi Everyone
I've read so many useful posts here I thought I'd offer up my own situation for help and advice. My fiancee and I are trying to plan our honeymoon, which will be the first 2 weeks of June. A friend offered use of her Chalet in Villars-sur-Ollons, which got us looking at Switzerland. All the photos look breathtaking. I'm currently trying to formulate an itinerary that will give us 4-5 relaxing days in Switzerland, take us into the Ticino and then into Northern Italy and ultimately Venice. I'm wondering a few things: Should I rent a car to get up and down the mountain? What are the essential day trips from Villars (I'm thinking of spending some time along Lake Geneva in Montreux, Vevey, etc)? How warm will it be in early June? And finally, does it seem feasible to travel to the Ticino from Villars - and then to Italy? Am I trying to do too much? Sorry for the long post - this wedding stuff ain't easy. Craig |
2 weeks for Villars-sur-Ollon, some sightseeing around the lake, Ticino and Venice seems ok to me.
4 to 5 days based in VsO, including Montreux-Vevey region, 1 day travel VsO>Ticino and then gradually onwards (3 days) to Venice (5 days). Do you have an open jaw ticket? You could hire the car the day you arrive in Switzerland and drop it upon arrival in Venice. The Villars - Ticino trip should be made by the Nufenen-pass; lovely sights climbing up to some 2400m. Some cities worth a stop in Northern Italy; Bergamo, Vicenza, Verona, Padova. You could even leave the car in Padova and take the boat along the Brenta canal to Venice. The trip takes all day and some visits of ancient villas are included. The arrival at San Marco in Venice through the laguna is wonderful and unforgettable. This excursion takes all day. |
Before making a final decision please check with any car rental agency as to the possibility of a very hefty drop-off charge for a car rented in one country and left in a different one.

Can only help with one small part. Definitely include Montreux and Vevey in your plans! Beautiful towns. I've only taken the train around, so can't advise about car rental.

as extra fees for returning a car in a different town, and even more in a different country, can be very high, it might be worthwhile to check out the advantage of hiring a car for the swiss part and then another one for the italian part. this would mean you have to go from Lugano to, let's say, Como in Italy by train to pick up another car.
