Switzerland for Two Days??

Hi All!

My mother, sister and I will be in Munich this July. My mother is interested in taking a trip to visit Switzerland. Is this even possible? I know trains run back and forth, but I don't know whether we would get there and immediately have to turn back again.

We are pretty open on what part of Switzerlad. We would just be going for the scenery and outdoors. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't do that. Go to Salzburg (under 2 hrs away), and head into the Alps that sit only 30 minutes outside the city.

Best wishes,

Rex

The scenic part of Switzerland is at best 5 hours away. Zürich by the fastest train is about 4.5 hours. I have ridden that route several times and don't think it very scenic.

Luzern is scenic, but it is an hour's ride from Zürich.

So for a day trip, I do not think it practical. You would get there, look at the lake, and start back to Munich.

Rex knows that area well. I recommend heeding his advice.

Why, thank you, bob... I know it pretty well. I suspect that a lot of other regulars here know it as well and better.

I didn't necessarily read the question as a "day trip". Even for Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, I'd recommend at least an overnighter.

Personally, I think it depends on what part of Switzerland you want to see, if only briefly. I STRONGLY disgaree that the "best" part means going all the way to Zurich or Luzern. The area around Lake Constance is quite scenic, for example..all depends on what you'll be satisfied with.

We aren't very picky........I think my mom wants to go, because she thinks "Sound of Music", the hills are alive type scenery. I guess mountains would be good. They are very outdoors oriented, so anything close and natural (not an urban area) would be good.

Wasn't "Sound of Music" in Austria?
