Switzerland Day Trip???
I will be traveling to Munich in early September for a business meeting and would love to see Switzerland. I have very limited time, is there a neat city that is doable as a day trip from Munich (either by train, car or boat (Lake Constance)?? I was thinking of going to Fussen to see King Ludwigs castle and could leave from there as well. Thank you for all of your help, I promise to come back to Switzerland later to see all of the beauty is has to offer??

I don't think so. The distance is too far for a daytrip. Maybe you should save it for next time. There are plenty of other places to see near Munich, or hop over to Salzburg.

A trip by train from Munich to Lindau (for Lake Constance) would take a minimum of about three hours (that's using a direct, no change, service...with changes it would take even longer). Salzburg is 1 1/2 hours by rail. Fuessen is basically at the end of the rail line...no further services by rail into either very nearby Austria or into Switzerland.
A car might be a better possibility. |
I know you want to go to Switzerland but if I were you I would do the day trip to Salzburg. It is doable by train. Or at least it was back in 1988 when I did it. :-) Just study the train schedule and see what time trains depart from Munich and from Salzburg back. Seems like I had 4 or so hours to walk around Salzburg; found a tour van to take me for a tour when I got there. The scenery going from Munich to Salzburg is quite nice.
You can also do Neuschwainstein Castle in a day trip if I remember correctly. Not Switzerland but it doesn't get any better than the Bavarian Alps, IMO. |
It was a long day, however we took the train from Munich to Zurich in May. It's a long trip, however 5 hours of seeing Lake Zurich from their ferry/boat, enjoying the Alps, walking around the main part of the city, etc. was one of the highlights of our 3+ week trip to England, Italy, Austria and Germany. (with that side trip to Zurich of course)
