Switzerland- Cows grazing/ bells- Authentic farm scene from close distance
Cows grazing with bells in their necks- Authentic farm scene from close distance- Where can I see this?
Is it there at Ballenberg folk museum?
Do they have folk dances as well?

Please help

Ballenberg is probably your only chance. April is too early for this outside a museum.

How long are you there? Your other thread mentions 10 April. Accorsing to the Ballenberg website they open for the season on 15 April.

Definitely too late for you, but there will be a folk exhibit there including dancing but only from 8 May.

I will be in Switzerland from 16th April to 24th April 10.
Ballenberg would be open. But yes, I will miss the folk dance.
Do not know what else they have.
Any other place? Emmantel region?

Hi Paragkash,

You may want to take a look at the Swiss national tourist office to see all the festivals, etc, in the country. Here is a link to their page on customs and festivals (there are four pages of them):

Another area that may be what you're looking for are their suggestions for historic attractions (there are six pages of them):

Hope you find what you're looking for!

Dear Fodorites,

I have revised my travel dates and itinerary (from April to May 2nd week) as per feadback from Fodors Forum.

Where can I see the COWS GRAZING, hear COWBELLS RINGING, the authetic farm scene in Switzerland.

My itinerary is as follows..

9th May (Sunday)- Ballenberg-

Folk dances of Central Switzerland. (My experience with Skansen, Stockholm was extremely wonderful when we saw folk dances in Spring carnival on 30th April 08) I hope we get some experience of Folk life and dances.

10th May- Lauterbrunnen, K.S., Mannlichen, Grindelwald.

11th May - Spiez, Thun area

12 TH May Zermatt

13 th May Gruyeres, Broc

14th May Chamonix, Mont Blanc

15 th May Montreux, Aigle Vevey

16th May Geneva

The Bernese Oberland will have cows high up near mannlichen in the month of July August.
Where on my above route, can I hear COWBELLS RINGING

Please help...

Sorry, in April/early May the answer is "nowhere". Possibly somewhere in the lowlands if the spring comes early and gets warm quickly this year, but normally it is too early.

Maybe in Ballenberg, but I am not sure whether it couns as "authentic". And if they were to keep "authenticity" the cows would be in the sheds in April there, too.

you could try somewhere in Fribourg, or Vaud, or even in the Valais on the plain. By mid April the cows will be out in the fields on the plain but they do not go up to the summer pastures on the mountains until June. They do have cowbells on though, even on the plain!
As for flowers - aside from bulbs, May is a bit soon for wildflowers in the fields.

O... Oh
That means I am still a bit early.
I changed my travel plans from April to May, so that it is bit warmer and I can see the Spring flowers bloom and the pastures on the greens.

I am planning to visit the Gstaad, Saanen area and Aigle on the plains of Valais.

Should I try Emmental, Entelbuch area?
