Switzerland and Milan - $442 air for xmas and new years
Hey guys,
I just found multi-city travel for 12/23-1/2 from JFK into zurich and out of milan for $442 tax included. I know this is an awesome deal but it seems kinda crazy to book 7 months in advance, don't you think? Especially since I haven't worked out my itinerary. Can someone help?
I'll have 9 full days there, during those days, I want to visit Zurich, Geneva, some of the small towns that ppl mentioned along the Zurich/Geneva area, and Milan for outlet shopping. I have to go to Milan for the outlet shopping, so that can't be scratched from my itinerary. and since my flight out of Milan is 645am, and I assume the outlet is closed on New Year's day, that means shopping would be on new year's eve. is 2 days enough in Milan? which leaves me 7 days for Switzerland. Do you think this is possible or I'm gonna waste my trip by trying to cram everything. btw, i'm travelling with a friend and we're both very energetic ppl, we don't mind staying out all day as long as we get to see everything.
Thanks.
Do you think the airfare would get cheaper and remain the same fare for the dates that I mentioned?

Airfare is not going to get cheaper than $442. And booking 7 months out is not crazy if you get a good deal. We were in Italy over Christmas and New Years holidays last year. Lots of things close or have very short hours. I would not plan on the outlet shops all being opened on New Years Eve day. you may want to get to Milan a day earlier. 2 days is enough for other sites in Milan.

There is absolutely nothing crazy about booking airfare 7 months or MORE out, especially if you are determined to go...UNLESS you like posting here about "when do airfares go down?" and "how long should I wait?" Answer: nobody knows for sure.
You can work the itinerary out around the travel days..and my other recommendation is that if you are trying to book accommodations on a website and it won't allow you to due to the timing, e-mail them.
In terms of wasting time or cramming everything in...nobody can answer that since whether or not you feel you are seeing too much/not doing enough is ultimately up to you.
If you want "scenic" as in stereotypical I'd head away from Zurich at once (as much as I like that city)..I'd be tempted to skip Geneva as well..
What do you like to do besides shop?

I've travelled Philly to Frankfurt and BWI to London, returning out of Paris the last two summers, respectively. The airfare price you quote is just as good as my first trip in 2003 and cheaper than my 2004 trip. I'm always checking Europe airfare and this is the most expensive I've seen it in the last few years. There are still bargains, but they are harder to find. That price is great! Go for it!
Check Ryan Air and Easy Jet for cheap travel between your cities. Ryan Air was great for us and we were even with a group - 17 of us.

Sounds fantastic to me!! I can't imagine finding a cheaper fare, and personally I *never* bother planning an itinerary until after I have a plane ticket. Also I'm one of the people here who adore the towns outside Geneva (Vevey, Montreux).
Zurich, Geneva, Milan aren't huge distances apart so I think you can easily figure out a very nice 9 day trip and would be especially festive over the holidays.

jane,
sorry to get back to u so late, but that fare is no longer available. i was just perusing airline websites and searched with those dates, coincidentally found it for so cheap. that same leg i was talking about is now $725+tax on aa.com. i guess u can keep checking.
i didnt book the trip b/c i wasn't sure I can commit being that it's 7 months in advance, and I have a couple of trips before xmas so I feel kinda guilty booking an xmas trip when my cape cod and hawaii trip this summer aren't even near fulfilled.
thanks for helping anyway.
