We spent 9 days in Zurich in Oct.and while the weather in places like Appenzell was chilly, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves without the summer crowds. We took a day trip to Lucerne, very enjoyable, and also a day trip to St. Gallen...both via train, with no problems at all.

We did Appenzell and St. Gallen in a day from Zurich in November. The leaves and flowers (except in the flower markets) were pretty much gone, and the snow was only on the mountaintops, but the town was delightful and charming all the same. We did not notice a lot of other tourists in either place. We had a fabulous lunch in St. Gallen and a wonderful dinner in Appenzell. Much better for more moderately priced (cheap by comparison, actually) than anywhere else we went in eastern Switzerland. As I recall, the weather was rainy and chilly and overall dreary, and we loved the scenery anyway. For Doc: I doubt much has changed in 30 years.

love reading about Appenzell and the cows and the architecture. I spent a day in Appenzell by train when I stayed a week in Rapperswil (Zurichsee) one June. So if you'd like to combine lake town with hilly country cow-bell town . . . .p.s. also glad to read someone's mention of St. Gallen. I thought that was a very beautiful city; what a library!
