Switzerland 2nd week of May

Hello,

This question is referring to Lucerne, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen area.
Can anyone who has traveled to Switzerland in the month of May tell me what the weather is like. I have heard many of the lifts and trails are closed at this time due to maintenance and snow. I would like to see Mt. Rigi and schynige platte, etc. Any personal experiences are much appreciated.

Thank you.

In May, you can expect very nice, springlike weather (however, be alway prepared for rainfall).

Mt. Rigi is open year-round, the (more interesting) tram to Mount Pilatus opens in the beginning or mid of May (depending on weather conditions). The train to Schynige Platte opens May 26, but there are other spectacular trains in the Jungfrau region open year round (from Interlaken-Ost to Jungfraujoch).

In any case, you will have enough options to enjoy the scenery.

From personal experience, do not plan your itinerary on a day-to-day basis, but stay a couple of days at one place and see how the weather will be. I know from this forum that many travellers make itineraries like this

...
day x Montreux
day y Jungfraujoch
day z Milan
...

And then, on day y, it is cloudy and raining...

For the mountains, you need to take your time.

Thank you for your reply and the advice to take the Bernese Oberland region day by day. I will keep that in mind. We plan on spending 7 days in the region, so hopefully one or two days will be clear for a ride up!

Would you recommend I move the Switzerland date to the 3rd/4th week of May? I would arrive on the 20th. Thank you for your time.

We were in Lauterbrunnen on May 24, 25 and 26 this year. Had great weather. Went up the Jungfrau early one morning. Foggy at the top at first then cleared and was gorgeous. The Mannlichen to KS hike was not open, but other than that I would not hesitate to go at that time again.

Variable weather any time of year, especially spring but places you want to go will be fine. Hiking is more problematic at higher elevations.

I've visted the BO in May (and April) and I'd not hesitate to do it again...and we're hikers. Hiking at high elevation can be a bit unpreditible and sometimes muddy - a little flexibility goes a long way. The later in May the better.

For specific opening dates, take a look here:
