Switzerland?!

I am planning my itinerary for my trip to Europe this summer, and I was wondering if anyone had some glaring recommendations of what city to go to or what to see.

Actually, if anyone has info on Altdorf I would be interested in that as well.

Thanks!

Scott: For general info about Switzerland go to
myswitzerland.com

As I do NOT know what your specific interests are (culture, mountains, cities, lakes, cows, chocolate...), it is difficult to give good advice.
But consider Berne, Basel, Zurich, Lucerne, the Bernese Oberland, maybe Lausanne/Geneva/Montreux (French part) and Lugano/Ascona/Locarno (Italian part).
I do not know whether Altdorf itself has an own website. The place is not THAT interesting. If they have one, it most probably will be in German only.
But have a try and come back, if you need specific info.
Yes, I guess I should have been more specific about my interests, even though I am only looking for *any* suggestions...general information about different things to do.

The one thing I should have mentioned is that a great part of my cultural heritage comes from Altdorf, Switzerland, but unfortunately I do not know much about the town.

So, actually, Altdorf would be interesting to me, Ursula...but that's OK! =^D You didn't know, because I didn't say anything about that...

Scott: Altdorf has a webpage! A nice one even, but just in German!
www.altdorf.ch
You'll see some pictures and the hotels. But the place is not that touristy. Interesting, quite some people here have Swiss ancestors.
I hope my.switzerland.com helps for general inputs. How long do you plan to be in Switzerland anyway.
Scott: The Canton (county) Uri, where Altdorf is located, has a page in English although not especially for tourists. And last update says: May 12,1999!
www.uri.ch

PS: myswitzerland.com is correct (no . after my, sorry)

Our idea of a "glaring recommendation" in Switzerland is the mountains, and specifically the Jungfrau region. There's none finer in Europe. Secondary attraction Luzern.

With your interest in Altdorf you might consider spending a few days around the Vierwaldstättersee (Lake Lucern) which stretches from Luzern to near Altdorf. We've enjoyed staying in both Vitznau and Weggis and, with car, making day trips in the area, even as far to the south as the Jungfrau region.

Altdorf is a small town of 8-10,000 people standing as somewhat of a sentry on the approach to the St. Gotthard Pass. While part of the German-speaking area of Switzerland its nearness to the Ticino brings some Italian influence to the town in food and other aspects.

The only "tourist interest" is the William Tell monument in the main square of town. There is a small Tell Museum in or near the town.

Staying in the Vierwaldstättersee area provides many opportunities to explore "Tell Country" and sites important to the founding of the Confederation.
