Here's a link to a discussion on Trip Advisor about things to do in London over Christmas:

http://tinyurl.com/2u7lal

This info on Christmas 2007 on the londontown.com website might help too:

As noted above, transportation seems to be your biggest challenge.

I did a quick search on London Guest Suites and here are just a representative few - don't know if any of them are available for your dates but they all cost less than the Sloan Gardens flat and take 5-night bookings . . . .

Another source would be Chris - e-mail address: [email protected] He used to manage Scala House which is no longer short term lets. But Chris and his asst manager Boba have contacted all their old clients saying he can find apartments for them.

And keep checking vrbo -

rather funny reply from one of the flats I inquired about. I have a friend who is a spokesperson for a product on QVC in London - she sent me a link to the apartment she often rents... the reply from the owner was:

Sorry, but I am too much of a last minute person to take bookings so far ahead. If you want to contact me in the late fall I may know by then, but usually make plans even up to a couple of weeks before. sorry and thank you

I got a giggle out of it!

I think I have nailed down our apartment in Paris but am still struggling with London. I have realized in order for us to be comfortable I am going to have to spend closer to 450.00 USD a night. I think that because we will be dining in most nights that will be fine.

Very nice apartment, dawn. The Chelsea/Sloane Square area in a great location. We stayed here on our Christmas visit.

I'm afraid my trip report is still a "work in progress".

It is lovely - if it fits in your budget it would be a great place to stay. The description says near Sloane Sq - it isn't that far, but I actually think the South Kensington tube station is a bit closer than Sloane Sq.

Boy that little map was difficult to manuver. Here's an easier map and it looks like it's slightly closer to South Kennington. Nice location, beautiful apartment.

Janisj and stw - thank you for the feedback.

Stw - how was it at Christmas? I see you also needed to rent a larger place- you liked that one? Any pointers for Christmas visits?

I believe we are going to switch yet again. I have become aware of the cool Christmas markets through out France and am looking at staying in Strasburg for a few nights. I believe I just might stay one night in London (I know.. I know... might not be a great idea).

I cannot change my airfare at this point as I am afraid to even try to deal with it after the headache of the saga with the airfare - so we are definately flying into London on the 23.

I am thinking of this:

December 23-24 London staying at the Marriott County hall

December 24-26 or 27 Strasburg
not sure on accomadation yet

December 27 - Jan. 2 Paris

After all this, it will be interesting to see where you really do end up!

betty I am making myself nutz!

I really kept hitting a wall on accomadations in London as well as the fact that everything is shut down for those two days (Christmas and Boxing day) and the cost factor. We have points for one of the rooms at the Marriott.

Anyway - I am obviously still bouncing around. I do have the apartment and have settled on the one that someone from the forum has actually stayed at twice... not in the area I orginally wanted but it is a lovely flat at a good price - and I really like that someone has stayed there/dealt with the owners etc.

I think our trip to Europe the summer of 07 changed about 100 times ;-) But we DID end up going and ended up loving the two areas that were "late adds" Montruex and Florence the most!

noncomformist - I thought that I read that this one goes till December 31 but I could have been mistaken. A lot of reading/researching. Wouldn't that just be a hoot?

Hi Dawn -
Wow! What a roller coaster of planning! I think the trip to Paris and Strasbourg sounds fabulous. I'm just back and plotting my next trip already. I think you can't go wrong with France and your family will really enjoy it.

rose...rose... rose!!! You have been on my mind. I have wondered where you have been and how your daughter is?????

Where were you. Yes, I believe we are a slightly sick bunch back from one trip - suitcases sometimes not even unpacked and planning and plotting our next!

In other news it is Mulhouse that has the Christmas Market until December 31.

Dawn we had the most fabulous trip!!!

Definitely not to Kenya and it took me awhile to not be sad about that, and to stop worrying about all the money I was spending, and I know we told everyone we were going to Spain. What can I say? The pasta and gelato were calling! So, after 1 1/2 weeks in beautiful Paris we went to Venice, Bologna, Florence, Assisi and Rome. We were gone 3 and a half weeks and had such fun and great food every single day. Our focus generally was to walk enough to be hungry for the next amazing meal. By the end I was sooooo relaxed.

DD and I have a plan to post a joint trip report but she's now starting a new job in Seattle - not going back to the Peace Corps - and it may just be me with her chiming in. Her story of leaving Kenya and arriving in Brussels in January in flip flops is a funny touch so somehow she'll have to add that in.

oh Rose - I am SO glad your daughter is okay - and frankly glad she is in Seattle. It is my understanding the unrest continues in Kenya.

Italy is ALWYAYS wonderful!!

I am still trying to figure out where on earth we are going to be from December 23-28 ... now looking into Brugge<sp>?... Brussels... for one night.. I am all over the place. No one in my family got excited about Brugg though.
